My 3-month puppy won't eat 3 times a day. Can I feed him twice?

Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. At his age it is not ideal because their blood sugar can get too low in the middle of the day. If it's unavoidable however, it is ok. Yes, you can try another food if Dante seems healthy otherwise. Stick with high quality brands and formulas for large breed puppies since Dante is expected to be a very large dog. Brands like Purina ProPlan and Science Diet are good options. If he continues to not eat well, have him examined by the veterinarian. I understand how confusing it can be to read and obtain conflicting information. Since Wallace is only 2 months old and is so small, I generally recommend feeding at least 3-4 times per day. The purpose of more frequent feeding at a young age and small size is to maintain an adequate blood glucose (sugar) at all times. Very small, young dogs are at a risk of developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) that can lead to lethargy, weakness, or even seizures if they do not eat frequently. Continue feeding Wallace the same volume of food, but divide it into 3-4 meals per day rather than 2 for the next month or so. Around 5-6 months of age, you can decrease his feeding frequency to twice daily. Just remember to keep an eye on the chart that is found on your bag of food since the volume of food that Wallace will need will change as he gets older and larger. Also, scarfing down food can put a large breed puppy at risk for ingestion of excess air and bloat which can be life threatening. I recommend adding a feeding, perhaps of the same amount as the other two and consulting with your vet re: body condition scoring. If your puppy currently has a low body condition score (google body conditon scoring dogs for a diagram), continue with the extra feeding until Luke is at an ideal body condition (noticeable waist but ribs/spine not prominent). If rapid eating persists, purchasing a puzzle feeder to slow down feedings (available on Amazon.com) is recommended. Good luck!
