What Are Types of Dog Allergies?

Environmental allergies (atopic dermatitis): The most common type. Triggered by allergens in the environment both indoors and outdoors like pollen, mold, dust mites, and grass. Symptoms often but not always follow seasonal patterns. Up to 30% of the canine population is affected by atopic dermatitis.

Food allergies: An immune response to a specific dietary protein — most commonly beef (34% of cases), dairy, and chicken (17%). Food sensitivities tend to cause signs in younger patients, however, they can occur in middle aged animals.

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD): A sensitivity to proteins in flea saliva. Even minimal flea exposure can cause a reaction in dogs prone to this allergy, which is one reason year-round flea prevention is so helpful.

Contact allergies: Less common. Can be triggered by certain shampoos, cleaning products, or materials that come into direct contact with the skin.

• More scratching, licking, or chewing than usual — often focused on paws, face, ears, and belly
• Recurring ear discomfort and infection (head shaking, scratching at ears, or an unusual odor)
• Skin that looks pink, irritated, or feels rougher than usual
• Thinning coat or small areas of hair loss in frequently scratched spots
• Watery eyes or occasional sneezing (more common with environmental allergies)
• Digestive changes like loose stools or occasional vomiting (more common with food allergies)

• An air purifier with a HEPA filter in sleeping areas can help reduce airborne allergens
• Year-round flea prevention is one of the simplest steps you can take, even for dogs who mostly stay indoors
