Distinguishing a food allergy from a food sensitivity — or from an environmental allergy — is something your veterinarian can help sort out. The most reliable approach is an elimination diet trial: 8–12 weeks on a vet-selected food with proteins your dog hasn't eaten before, which allows symptoms to settle and gives a clearer picture of what's driving the reaction.

What are Types of Allergy-Friendly Dog Food?

Novel Protein Diets: Use a protein source your dog has never eaten before, reducing the chance of immune reactivity. Examples: duck, venison, rabbit, kangaroo, bison. Look for a single animal protein source on the ingredient list.

Hydrolyzed Protein Diets: Proteins are broken down into such small particles that the immune system cannot recognize them as allergens. These are typically prescription formulas recommended by veterinarians for dogs with confirmed allergies. Examples: Hill's z/d, Royal Canin HP

Limited Ingredient Diets (LID): Contain fewer ingredients overall to minimize exposure to potential allergens. Not the same as hydrolyzed or prescription diets, but useful for dogs with mild sensitivities.
