Hello! Our maltese has severe allergies. She itches her eyes daily and sneezes occasionally. Our poodle doesn't scratch as much, but he also sneezes. We feed both Royal Canin and a variety of meat snacks from Korea. We have brought this (Hot Dog's eye redness) to the attention of our vet but have yet to find the cause. I am writing to hear what you think is the probable cause of both their symptoms and ask how you would typically diagnose allergies in dogs? How can I help relieve their symptoms?

Leo is adorable! Yes, I can see that he is rubbing the hair around his eyes. Allergies can be very challenging to deal with in dogs, and there a number of diagnostic and treatment options available. We will sometimes perform blood or skin testing to look for environmental allergens. I am attaching a handout below which will have more information for you.

For a dog as young as Leo, my best suggestion is always to consult with a veterinary dermatologist. That way you will get all the right testing and treatment trials performed right away. Hopefully you can find a dermatologist near you here
