About the Akita
The Akita is a confident and reserved breed that can become deeply devoted to their family. While affectionate with trusted people, they tend to be cautious around strangers and require thoughtful socialization. Although the breed was historically revered as a family dog, caution and supervision should always be used around children. Even with extensive training and socialization, the Akita is often not tolerant of strange dogs at maturity and aloof with strangers. While the Akita is a protective companion known for strong guarding instincts and quiet confidence, some pet parents say this breed also has a silly side that comes out with those the dog is bonded to.
Working Group
Dogs of the AKC Working Group were bred to perform important jobs such as guarding property, pulling sleds, and conducting water rescues. Throughout history, these dogs have been invaluable partners to humans. Breeds like the Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky, and Great Dane are part of this group. Intelligent and quick to learn, they can be excellent companions, but their large size and strength require consistent training and may not be suitable for every household.

The Akita is considered a symbol of good health and happiness in Japan.
A loyal Akita named Hachikō inspired the movie “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale,” and there is a statue of him outside Tokyo’s Shibuya Station.
Helen Keller received an Akita named Kamikaze-go during a visit to Japan circa 1937-1938, bringing the first Akita to the United States. Sadly, he passed very young of distemper and the Japanese gifted Keller with Kamikaze-go’s younger brother, Kenzan-go in 1939.
Akitas are naturally quiet and tend to bark less than many other breeds.
History
The Akita originated in northern Japan, where they were bred for hunting large game such as boar and bear. Over time, the breed became a symbol of loyalty and protection. Today, the Akita is valued as both a companion and a guardian, maintaining their strong instincts and dignified presence. The breed almost went extinct during WWII and today the Akita is recognized in both the United States and most other countries as two separate breeds: the American Akita and the Japanese Akitainu.
