When should I give my kitten a calcium supplement from the pet store?

Hello. It appears based on the label that you can give kittens 1 to 2 per day. That being said, if he is on a good, balanced diet he should not need a vitamin supplement. You can surely over-supplement a kitten and cause more harm than good. I would recommend a good balanced diet and no supplements. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Many vitamins can be toxic to cats or kittens if given in the wrong dose. I would instead make sure the kitten is on a good quality kitten food or milk replacer if not nursing the mother.

As long as they are eating a high quality diet made for kittens they do not need any extra vitamin supplements despite how much or how little they eat. If you want to give a vitamin you can but it needs to be one made for cats.

Properly balancing a home cooked diet for cats is extremely difficult, and is nearly impossible for growing kittens. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning that they require meat as the staple of their diets. They are also require a careful balance of amino acids, particularly taurine, to maintain optimal health. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy, abnormal bone growth, or a host of other problems. I strongly recommend exclusively feeding Pelly a commercial kitten food to provide a proper nutritional balance for optimal growth. Royal Canin kitten food is a great option! You do not need to add additional foods or vitamins while feeding commercial diets. If you decide to feed more home cooked foods, try to wait until she is fully grown, and then only do so under the guidance of a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (including the recommendations found on www.balanceit.com). Hi and thanks for posting on PetCoach! The first thing I'd make sure Willow is eating is enough calcium. Be sure Willow is eating a kitten food until she is about 9 months to a year of age as kitten food has more calcium and other minerals in it that is required for healthy bone growth. A great supplement you may want to consider is DHA and EPA. Both are types of omega 3 fatty acid that are excellent for healthy development for multiple organ systems such as the heart, brain, skin, and bone/joint health. Once Bone is 5-6 weeks old start feeding him a commercial puppy food, like Purina puppy chow. If you are bottle feeding him with a puppy formula you can start mixing that with puppy food now. All commercial puppy foods are nutritionally balance. Over supplementing calcium can cause harm. I hope this helps!

Hi, no the fact that Kittens were too big does not depend on supplements as these don’t cause an increase in size of kitten. Supplements don’t cause an increase in body size, they work within the body to help it get stronger. Excessive calories will cause an increase in size, however there is also a genetic component, if dad/dads were a big cat kittens might be too large to pass for a young cat that is giving birth for the first time. There are also other factors that will cause troubles giving birth, and the fact the kittten was positioned feet first was the main problem that caused him to unfortunately get stuck in the birth canal. This would have occurred with smaller kittens as well. Hope this helps !
