Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bone is SUPER cute!!

I do not recommend calcium supplementation. Once Bone is 5-6 weeks old start feeding him a commercial puppy food, like Purina puppy chow. If you are bottle feeding him with a puppy formula you can start mixing that with puppy food now.

All commercial puppy foods are nutritionally balance. Over supplementing calcium can cause harm.

The general requirement for calcium intake is roughly 25mg per lb of bodyweight. As long as you are feeding a commercialized diet formulated for dogs, toy will not have a problem with calcium and I would certainly not add more than what is needed as rapid growth can lead to conformational defects with the bones. If you are trying to formulate your own diet then I would suggest visiting www.balanceit.com and use the autobalancer to create your own diet. On this site you can also buy the powdered vitamin and mineral supplement that will have the right amount of calcium. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Should I give my pregnant dog calcium supplements? Is it safe?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend feeding a pregnant dog puppy food. MOST dogs do not need a calcium supplement. Little breed dogs are at a higher risk of low calcium. Low calcium IF it will be a problem, occurs after birth during the first few days with large litters nursing or in small breed dogs. I wouldn't start a calcium supplement until all the puppies are born. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Do large breed puppies need supplements for healthy bone development?

It is never recommended to give puppies multi vitamins and calcium supplements. This will affect Fang's growth adversely, and it is not needed. A good quality puppy food will provide all the nutrients he needs. I also advise again feeding him Orijen. It's grain free, and vets are seeing a link between dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets. The FDA is now investigating that link. Grain free food is a fad, grains are actually good for dogs. I'd feed him a puppy food from brands such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I hope this helps!

Can I add fish oil & calcium to my puppy's Royal Canin kibble?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I do not recommend adding a calcium supplement to puppy food it can affect bone growth significantly in a puppy. I recommend stopping that immediately unless directed by your Vet. As for the fish oil, that is fine but how often depends on the brand you are using. How many calcium milk bones are safe for my 4-month-old puppy?

Too much calcium in large breed growing puppies is highly problematic. This can lead to serious bone defects and diseases processes including possible Hypertrophic Osteodrystrophy (HOD). I would highly recommend refraining from calcium milk bones at this frequency and perhaps only giving them 2-3 times a week, instead of everyday, just to ensure you aren't giving them in excess. Also remember that snacks should only make up about 10% of your pets total caloric intake per day to avoid obesity. Good luck taking care of your pup Ghontu.
