Is it safe for my 4-month kitten to stay with dogs if unvaccinated?

From the core vaccines, rabies would be the main virus that could be transmitted from a kitten to a dog. If your dog isn’t up to date on rabies you should make sure he gets vaccinated not just due to potential exposure but also because it’s a very important human public health concern. I would guess that most kittens going into a foster situation would be too young for a rabies vaccine. You may want to have Onyx on a flea and tick preventative since young kittens can have fleas, and even if they have been dewormed intestinal parasites could still be a concern if he could access the litter box. If your cat Maria is regularly vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms, Dave can come without problems. It is best anyway to have him vaccinated anyway as it would be more risky for the kitten (and not for Maria). It's not the litter box sharing that I would be worried about. It is the direct contact between the two cats that would make me nervous. He could transmit to her any number of diseases: rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, herpes virus, panleukopenia, feline leukemia, FIV, etc..........The most Ivy would "get" from the other cat by sharing the litter box would be roundworms or hookworms and chances are she already has those. Both cats need to be dewormed and vaccinated as soon as possible. Ivy is old enough now and the other cat is way overdue. Because Jiji hasn't been vaccinated before, she will need at least two rounds of vaccines given four weeks apart in order to have full immunity. Vaccinating her on Monday will not be enough to protect her. Make sure your dad fully cleans the room, and bring your own food and water bowls as well as litter box so that she doesn't share anything with his cat. Keep your kitten in the room, and allow her to have no contact with the other cat. I do recommend getting her vaccinated, so have her seen by the vet on Monday to start the process. Best of luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding the kittens. I would also check to see that they have been tested for FeLV (feline leukemia) and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). They need a fecal sample tested and to have been dewormed prior to introducing them to each other. If they have had these tests done, then they certainly would likely enjoy some companionship. This is great. I would freshen up your Angora cat's vaccination and when you adopt your new kitten, make sure it is examined, wormed and vaccinated by your veterinarian. All should be well then. Oh, and there will be a lot of hissing and spitting....do not despair. It will take time but eventually they will at least tolerate each other or even like each other. Make sure you give your older kitty just as much loving as up to now so she does not feel neglected.
