Is my unspayed cat in pain? She's growling and drawing legs up.

It sounds as though Rosemary is in pain. It is difficult to say for sure where since I cannot examine her. One thing I noted is that Bella is sleeping more upright than on her side and meows constantly. I'm wondering if she is in pain, and that's also why she is hiding. I'd have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a health check.

Hello Matthew! I am sorry to hear about Spotty. I would be very concerned about her. Cats are usually very good at hiding their pain, so if she is obviously yelping she is definitely in pain. I would recommend an examination by a veterinarian as soon as possible. They will do an exam and try to localize the pain to a certain area. I am concerned about her abdomen due to her lack of appetite. Things that would concern me in a young adult cat such as Spotty are foreign boys in the intestinal tract (did she eat a toy or a ribbon etc) or possible kidney infections. The vet will most likely want to do some bloodworm and possibly some radiographs (x-rays). If she hasn't been eating or drinking, she might need some supportive care such as IV fluids.

It sounds lke she is feeling well. Because she is acting painful when you lift her and she also isn't spayed, I would suspect she may have a condition called pyometra or even a urinary tract infection (if increased urination and drinking is seen). I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet for a proper exam and some testing. Cats will initally present with very unspecific symptoms of illness, which can then progress fairly quickly if not caught and treated early, so its best to get her checked now to make sure everything is ok. This not being able to walk on her back legs isn't normal, and it's a medical emergency. Kitty has to see a vet now. This lump could be a post-op complication like a seroma. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Oh no, poor Shadow! She could be having a pyometra (infected uterus) event or another internal illness. None of these symptoms are normal for a cat in heat or just coming out or heat. And any cat that doesn't eat for more than a day should be examined by a vet because cats are masters at hiding diseaseand illness until they are really really sick. I would recommend taking Shadow in to be seen, examined and blood analysis ran to hopefully determine the underlying issue so that we know how best to treat her. Hopefully it is something your vet can deal with quickly so that we can get her feeling well again soon!

This is likely normal behavior if she is in heat. It is really recommended that she be spayed if she is not a breeding animal. Cats that are not spayed are at risk of developing mammary (breast) cancer and/or pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection). The more times they go through a heat cycle the chance rises.
