Why is my unspayed cat howling like she's calling her kittens?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Starting her heat cycle in a unspayed female cat is the most common reason for increased vocalization. Other possible causes are: she sees other cats outside (territorial), anxiety (cats outside, starting heat, changes to house hold), attention seeking, or medical issue. I would close the blinds temporarily, provide environmental enrichment (cat trees, interactive cat toys, lazer pointer, play with her) and consider spaying her. You can also consider a Vet exam to be sure it isn't a medical condition. If she is otherwise fine, I hope that is improves with time and some of the above. Have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My guess is that he is reaching sexual maturity at almost 6 months and he is intact. If there are intact female cats outside as well he is likely sensing them. I would consider neutering him to reduce the kitten population. If he is eating, drinking and otherwise fine then that is most likely the cause. Have a good day!

Since Pusen is not spayed yet, I'm wondering if she may be in heat - this is a very common cause of excessive vocalization in female cats, especially if she is also rolling around on the ground and yowling. Female cats stay in season almost constantly unless they are pregnant, so if you think this may be the problem, I would recommend having her spayed as soon as you are able to - this should resolve the excessive meowing if it is related to her heat cycle :)

Hello. It is possible that something got her kittens & she is distressed over this. Only time will help. It is possible that she also in heat again & a cat in heat is a very vocal cat. I would try to follow her to see if you can find the kittens. If she does not seem to want to find the kittens, then they may indeed be gone. Hello. This is common behavior for a female cat that is in heat. Although 5-6 months is young, she is old enough to be starting her first heat cycle. You can have your veterinarian examine her to make sure and discuss spaying her if that is your wish.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since he isn’t neutered he could smell a female cat in heat outside and want to mate. Be sure he is urinating, male cats are at risk for urinary obstructions. Sometimes they vocalized. If he is a senior cat, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can cause increased vocalization. It could be that Ochan is in heat, and her behavior of being super affectionate when you pet her makes me suspect this is the case. Cats do not always have constant behavior each time they go into heat, and they can act aggressive. If you do not want to have to deal with this constant cycle of behavior (and it can get worse with constant vocalization), I would recommend having her spayed as soon as possible.
