Why does my unneutered male cat have yellow stool and ammonia smell?

Urine is mostly water and urea which is a waste product of protein breakdown. Urea can develop into ammonia NH3 > NH4 which is why your cat litter smells like ammonia. You should empty out the litter completely more frequently (less deep litter with frequent cleaning is preferable for your cat). If your cat is older you should consider taking her in for blood testing to check her kidney function. There is a new test called SDMA which can detect early kidney disease.

It's possible the diet change and medication could cause the urine to change some. I would give it a few days as long as they aren't showing any other signs of illness, and make sure they are eating and drinking enough. If the problem persists, worsens, or other symptoms appear, a vet visit to rule out any other issues is best.

Usually, kittens over three weeks old no longer require physical stimulation to urinate and defecate. However, there is some variation in this number and it is possible that Milo is on the late end of that variation. I would try and stimulate the anogenital region to see if this can create a bowel movement. This very well may be the cause of the bloated appearance you are seeing currently. As for the urine, in my experience, cat urine never smells too great. However, a rotten egg scent could be an indication of some type of urinary tract infection or unbalanced pH of the urine. I have not heard of diet causing that kind of scent in the urine in cats, but I suppose it is possible. A three week old cat should not be eating much of anything other than KMR or the very beginnings of cat food in gruel form.

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. These signs must be checked as soon as possible as urinary tract infection can be dangerous in male (especially neutered) cats as it can develop into a urinary tract obstruction/blockage. The first step you should take is to have Picachu neutered. An unneutered male will commonly spray in the household. A veterinarian can check to ensure there are no illnesses like urinary crystals or a urinary tract infection causing the inappropriate urination. You should also use a product like Natures Miracle cleaning solution to try to remove urine odor from carpets and elsewhere in the house. The odor of urine will likely attract Picachu to areas and cause him to continue to spray. If the problem is severe you may need to remove the carpet. The following are some other steps you can try: 1. Cats will urinate or defecate outside of the litter box for stress related reasons. Therefore it is best to keep the litter boxes in several different, quiet areas of the household. 2. A pheromone diffuser like Feliway can be quite helpful. 3. Ensure you have at least one litter box in the household per cat plus one. For example, if you have 3 cats, then 4 litter boxes are recommended. 4. Feeding an all canned food diet can help if there is inflammation in the bladder. There are also prescription diets available to help with bladder inflammation or digestive issues. Your veterinarian can help you choose the best one for your cat. 5. The litter boxes should be cleaned once to twice daily and completely emptied and washed weekly. Most cats prefer litter to be the clumping type that is kept a few inches deep. Certain litter types like Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter may be helpful. 6. In a close area it is easy for parasites to spread, especially if the cats use the same area to go potty. I would recommend taking 1-2 cats to the vet and bring fresh poop samples so they can look with a microscope. If none are found, they may need to send the sample to a lab to look for a more rare parasite called tritrichomonas. This is usually found in a larger cat group and can come and go but it isn’t as common. Once a diagnosis is made, they may be able to get medications to get the cats treated. I would also clean up stool as often as you can to decrease spreading and clean littler boxes with soap and water daily. Good luck!
