My cow has surface cuts on her teats. How should I treat them?

If there is infection, she should be getting antibiotics. You can milk the udder, just discard the milk. Keeping the wound clean and dry will aid in healing. You can use diluted Betadine to clean it once or twice daily. Change the bedding frequently if she is in a stall. A serious wound should be addressed by a veterinarian experienced in treating small ruminants.

Hello. The cut could use some stitches, but as long as you keep it clean & treated, it should heal just fine. I would clean the wound with a good skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & clean at least twice a day. Then apply your spray. IT is possible your cow has mastitis. This is inflammation of the mammary gland. Mastitis can be mild or severe with a deep infection. Try to keep the teats as clean as possible. I would recommend trying to encourage the calf to nurse from the inflamed mammary gland or milk that teat often. IF the cows udder starts turning color, patient develops a fever or starts not feeling well I would recommend calling a vet for a good exam and possible antibiotics

This will depend on where on the hoof she nicked it. I would wash and scrub the hoof with water and then apply a disinfectant spray to the cut. You will need to watch the hoof for infection and lameness. If the cow starts to go lame, do not wait for it to go away by itself, because it will not. Call out a vet, as she likely will need prescription antibiotics, pain medicine and thee injury may have to be debrided to facilitate healing.

Hey there. From the pictures I can't really tell what that is exactly. In general with cattle I start with penicillin and add on as needed. They will probably need to flush the area as well. You can also get some diluted iodine to pour on in the meantime. Make sure you put on some fly spray so it isn't getting parasites in the wound. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A small skin abrasion or hot spot like you are describing may require topical antibiotics to heal. If it does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian. In the meantime, I would keep it clean and if you have grooming clippers try to carefully shave the fur in that area to allow it to heal (do not use scissors!). Good luck!

Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.
