My farm animal has a puncture wound. What can I use before the vet?

This will depend on where on the hoof she nicked it. I would wash and scrub the hoof with water and then apply a disinfectant spray to the cut. You will need to watch the hoof for infection and lameness. If the cow starts to go lame, do not wait for it to go away by itself, because it will not. You should clean the wound twice daily with cotton buds and ideally 4% chlorxhexidine or iodine solution (available over the counter at pharmacies). If you are not able to get these antiseptic products, you should use just boiled, warm water. Also, please make sure that Ponyo is not licking or scratching the wound. Putting a head cone may be necessary. Dressing wounds in dogs is often cumbersome. If the puncture is on the chest or the abdomen you can put a small t-shirt on Ponyo to cover it up..

Calves often have urinary stones that can plug up the urethra. So you need to make sure that he can urinate. If he cannot urinate it is an emergency and the vet needs to called out right away as this is a life-threatening condition. This also may a penis fracture which is very painful and needs to be treated. Please either take your calf to a vet or call him to come out.

It is infected and hard to see past the hair and drainage. It may be a scratch or puncture from some form of trauma either rubbing against something, a bite, or a hot spot. It does need to be seen by your vet for wound care and antibiotics. Until you can get him in, you can clean the area with soap and water to help flush the discharge out and clean it out.
