My pet pig cut her chin on fencing. What's the best way to treat it?

Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.

Hello again. I would use a mild antibacterial skin cleanser like Hibiclens. This has chlorhexidine & is available at any pharmacy. Treat the area at least twice daily. Hope this clears things up. Thank you.

You can try cleaning the area with a chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine skin scrub ( usually available at all pharmacies ) twice a day, & if it does not seem to be healing or appears to be getting worse over the next few days to a week & it continues to worry you, then do see your veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Keep the wound clean and dry. You can use just a damp cloth to clean the wound if needed. I would not recommend using any appointments or peroxide is that can cause worsening irritation. It will probably heal up just fine, but if you notice any swelling or discharge I recommend that does it to rule out infection or need for antibiotics.

Based on the photo you provided, it appears as though Stitch has an abrasion that may be secondarily infected. It does not look very deep based on the photo. If you are unable to get to a veterinarian to have this looked at right away, you can use a diluted solution of betadine and saline (mixed together until you have a light brown liquid) and use this to clean the abrasion of any contaminants. Once clean, you can then use a topical cream such as Sentry Topical Wound cream (applied to the area twice daily until resolved) found at your local Petco. I would also recommend that you use a plastic cone around his head to help prevent him from rubbing his head, which would further worsen the area. If this does not improve or it worsens, I would then recommend having a veterinarian examine Stitch so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If it does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian. In the meantime, I would keep it clean and if you have grooming clippers try to carefully shave the fur in that area to allow it to heal (do not use scissors!). Good luck!

Hello. So much depends on where the wound is, how deep it is & how easy it is to handle the bird. Some wounds will heal very nicely on their own & it is surprising how quickly they can heal. I have treated & sewn up some of my own hens that survived raccoon attacks, some survive & others that appear less severely injured died. If the bird will allow you to clean the wound, use a skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). Then, depending on how bad the wound is, you can use a triple antibiotic or even a wound spray like Catron which will also keep the flies off. All you can do is try, especially if there are no veterinarians in your area that will see birds ( call around, you might be surprised to find a vet that likes chickens ).
