My goat has an udder wound. How can it heal while she's milking?

Yes - the hardness and difficulty to express milk are typical signs of mastitis and she will require urgent veterinary treatment in order to prevent long term damage. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections are generally both required but vary on the different types of mastitis (taking a milk sample to your vet is very helpful to determine this); regular emptying of the affected milk also reduces the burden of infection. You may need to bottle feed the kids if both mammary glands are affected or they are anxious and hungry

There are many diseases that can cause something like this. I do not know what common diseases you see in Oman so it is difficult for me to comment. You are better off trying to get a vet to come to your farm and check the goats. We do not have enough information here to be helpful. My best guess is that this is papilloma virus warts. The problem can spread through the herd after purchase of an infected animal. Some self-cure at the end of lactation, some do not regress or will return the next year. A few transform into squamous cell carcinomas (cancer).

The best thing to do is to clean the wound well each day. You have to also make sure that the wound does not have maggots in it, because these will make the wound much worse. The fly spray is OK for outside the wound, but is not good for inside the wound and will delay healing. I recommend flushing the wound with clean water twice a day to help it heal quicker. I do not recommend applying any soaps or antiseptics like iodine to the wound, because this can also delay healing. I know this may seem contrary to what you have been told, but please trust that this is the best way to treat a wound. This commonly happens when they break their horns at the base. The tissue at the base can overgrow within a few days when injured like this. The best thing you can do is flush the area with warm water for five minutes. I do not recommend putting any soaps or antiseptics on the wound, because this can make it worse. If you can bandage the wound after flushing, then this would be helpful to prevent infection. Otherwise, it would be best to flush the wound once a day until the vet can get there. It's definitely best for the vet to see Louie soon, because these wounds commonly get infected; and if left for too long, the infection can get in the sinuses, which is very difficult to treat. Often times, these horn injuries require surgery and the horn may need to be removed. I hope that helps and Louie gets better soon.

If this is all of a sudden, you need to make sure she doesn't have an infection in her teats like mastitis making the milking process painful. The mild should be clear and not cloudy, and the teats soft and pliable, not rock-hard or extremely swollen. If she is new to milking, go slow, be gentle, and give her time to get used the the process. Good luck!

Hello. You should be able to treat this yourself. By the way it looks, I would be using wet dressings to help with drainage. You can use many materials, but the least expensive would be a woman's sanitary napkin or other thicker absorbant pad. Cut the pad to slightly larger than the wound & wet the bandage with sterile saline ( most pharmacies will have some type of simple saline wound wash ). Wet the pad so it is damp but not dripping & bandage this to the leg. No need for antibiotics, although plain granulated sugar or even honey placed on the pad will add an antimicrobial element to the dressing. Change the dressing daily & you will be surprised how much debris will be on the pad each day. Just keep doing this & the wound should start to look much better in another week to 10 days.
