How to stop my new kitten from waking me up very early each morning?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 months and 2 days old

I abopted a kitten about 6weeks ago, I’m new to cats, having grown it with only dogs. He is wonderful and doing well health wise but I’m unsure how to break his habit of waking me up very early every morning to rub his face on mine. He doesn’t stop when I push him away. Is there anyway to train him not to do this? My dog is used to having free rein so I don’t want to just always have the door shut. Thank you.

Congratulations on your new kitten Seamus! There's not likely a great way to train him not to do this in the morning. This is a common cat behavior and they wake us up because they are ready to start the day and they want to eat. Some cats act like this even if they have food in the bowl (they like the ritual). One thing you could try is getting an automatic feeder and set it to go off in the morning. Then Seamus may be distracted by the feeder and may leave you alone a bit longer. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
