Why is my kitten biting me and waking me up for food at night?

You may want to try an automatic feeder. You can set the timer to feed in the night. He may be hungry and wakes you up to feed him. It will also distract him and give him something to do instead of waking you up. You can also play with him before bed and don’t let him sleep in the evening so he will sleep longer. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Coco is adorable! Coco is just a kitten. Puppies and kittens sadly bite a lot. I would discourage play with your hands and only use toys. Also if she is sitting on your lap and you are petting her watch for signs that she is becoming annoyed with what you are doing (tail starts to flick, ears turning, turning her head towards your hand) and stop petting her. Most cats only like to be scratched or pet on their head and not past their shoulder blades. When she allows you to pet her without biting offer her treats. Refrain from chasing her, picking her up suddenly, rough housing with her as that can agitate cats then they become anticipatory for only negative interactions with you. When she is around you and not biting offer treats. Again she is very young and will likely grow out of a significant amount of this biting behavior. I wish you all the best!

I would keep a toy on a pole nearby and distract her from playing with you to playing, attacking and biting the toy that is away from you. Teaching her to fetch or chase a laser pointer will also keep her busy and tired. This is only a strage and she will grow out of this in a month or two. She will eventually outgrow it but I can sympathize. You're doing the right thing by playing with her a lot, but you should also provide plenty of ways for her to amuse herself. Make sure she has plenty of hiding places, things to scratch on, perches where she can see outside, and toys. Get her a stuffed toy that is roughly her size so she has something she can wrestle with like another kitten. You may even consider getting another kitten to keep her company and busy so you can get some sleep. You may have to resort to confining her when you sleep or shutting your door to keep her out.

I have to admit, I chuckled a bit at Loki slapping your face to wake you up! Not that it's funny to you, but look up Simon's Cat. There's a cartoon about the cat doing exactly that. Anyway, he will calm down a bit with age, but you need to stop the biting now. That's hard to do when you are sleeping, but when he does it when you are awake, tell him no, and turn your back to him. Ignore him until he behaves appropriately, and then give him attention. By doing this, you are showing what is and isn't appropriate behavior. When he plays well, give him lots of praise and treats. Should he wake you up, immediately remove him from your room and shut the door so he can't get in. He will learn quickly that if he does this behavior to you to wake you up, he will be removed from the room and not get what he wants. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Mason is adorable! Every kittens personalities are different. Try to pick up on his ques that he is becoming annoyed BEFORE he tries to bite or scratch. Watch his face, ears and tail and stop holding him or petting him. Kittens are rambunctious and will eventually grow out of a lot of the scratching and biting as long as you aren't pushing their personal boundaries. Cats are naturally nocturnal and will b e more active at night. You can try to train him to sleep better at night by limiting daytime naps. You have only had him for a week, give yourself and Mason some time to figure out a routine! Good luck!
