Why is my 12-year-old cat vomiting bile nightly with fishy breath?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My 12 year old cat has been vomitting every night which is something he has never done. He has a pungent strong fishy odour from his breath. He has never suffered with hair balls and is brushed daily. The vomit is large, very yellow with a tint of orange and is mostly bile. He is an indoor cat and is regularly given worming tablets. Feed is the same which is dry biscuits. He is having normal bowel movements. Drinking and appetite are normal. Seems o.k in himself just wanted advice please.

I would schedule a vet visit for a full exam and bloodwork. Sudden changes to breath and the inclusion of bile in the vomit could indicate an issue such as organ dysfunction which needs to be checked out and treated, especially if this has been ongoing for several days.

Elevated BUN (uraemia) in itself is associated with nausea and vomiting and the underlying cause should be investigated. Dehydration as a result of vomiting, intestinal bleeding, obstructive bladder stones, fever, diabetes and kidney disease can all contribute - a thorough urine analysis would be recommended. Fluid therapy would be advised as soon as a urine sample has been obtained in order to try and reduce levels but urine production must be monitored closely to prevent overhydration if kidneys are not able to function well

I would agree that Pete should be seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine him and discuss the need for additional diagnostics, such as systemic bloodwork. He could have an infection, parasites, metabolic disease (liver, kidney), endocrine disease (thyroid, diabetes), or an obstruction. The best thing would be to have him examined by veterinarian to determine the exact cause and best treatment. You're vet can run lab work and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and treat the problem. If he is dehydrated your vet can give fluids and medications to help control the vomiting.

Oh no, poor Chi Chi! It's quite serious that she is vomiting most mornings, and she could be suffering from liver disease, kidney failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or cancer among other causes. I would have Chi Chi seen by a vet sooner than next week if possible, and I would recommend having a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis done to survey her organ function and check for the diseases I mentioned above.
