Why is my senior cat shaking her head while eating and drinking?

It is possible that Tiger Lily's ears may be bothering her or she could have oral/jaw discomfort. I'm glad to hear that she seems to be fine other times, but her vet should examine her to check for the presence of an ear infection and oral changes.

I would recommend bringing Lily to a veterinarian. Lily can also have something like a bad tooth or an infection in her mouth. With her shaking her head it can also be an ear infection. With the symptoms you are describing they do not sound as severe as they typically would be with FOPS. Your veterinarian can evaluate her and see if they feel like there is something else wrong of the feline orofacial pain syndrome. Poor Missy! She could have a dental problem causing her symptoms, such as a tooth root abscess, broken tooth, or severe periodontal disease. There could also be a growth or foreign body in her mouth. Shaking the head frequently can also be a sign of an ear infection, while licking the mouth as well as not eating and drinking can be a sign of nausea . She is in pain from this, and she is showing this to by shaking her head frequently, licking her mouth, not eating, and not drinking. I would definitely have his ears swabbed and have them look under the microscope for signs of an infection. Otherwise, this could be a sign of a neurological issue and he may need to see a specialist.

She is either having diarrhea and is unable to make it to her box or she is ill enough that she is just not capable of getting there. Her veterinarian will likely recommend blood work and possibly other testing to determine the cause of her illness. From there, treatment can be prescribed. I would be concerned she may have kidney disease - reduced appetite, tooth loosening and vision loss due to high blood pressure and retinal detachment are common side effects. I recommend a vet check as soon as possible, taking a urine sample using special collection litter would be helpful for full assessment

Head tilt could be caused by deep inner ear infection (or polyp), stroke, infection such as toxoplasmosis, stroke, or even tumor although that would be rare at her age. If the toxo test comes back normal then I would consider requesting a referral to a neurologist where an MRI of the brain can be done.
