My senior cat is pawing her face and shaking her head. Is it FOPS?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Tonkinese | Female

Hi, My tonkinese cat who is about 13/14 years of age has just recently been pawing at her face and shaking her head, I did some research online and it sounds and looks the same as (fops) feline orofacial pain syndrome. I have seen videos that the cats are doing the same and she is. I was just wondering what I can do about it and what treatments there are to stop this. Thanks Joshua

I would recommend bringing Lily to a veterinarian. Lily can also have something like a bad tooth or an infection in her mouth. With her shaking her head it can also be an ear infection. With the symptoms you are describing they do not sound as severe as they typically would be with FOPS. Your veterinarian can evaluate her and see if they feel like there is something else wrong of the feline orofacial pain syndrome. Here is some information on FOPS if you would like to read more about it:https://www.fitzpatrickreferrals.co.uk/neurology/feline-orofacial-pain-syndrome-fops/
