My cat is licking mouth, shaking head, not eating or drinking. Is she sick?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 lbs

Our female cat began to lick her mouth and shake her head frequently this morning. She's not eaten anything (not even treats) and she won't drink. She doesn't like to be held under normal circumstanses and at the moment she's hiding. She doesn't seem to be in any pain though, but I'm not sure what to do or what this might be. Please help.

Poor Missy! She could have a dental problem causing her symptoms, such as a tooth root abscess, broken tooth, or severe periodontal disease. There could also be a growth or foreign body in her mouth. Shaking the head frequently can also be a sign of an ear infection, while licking the mouth as well as not eating and drinking can be a sign of nausea . She is in pain from this, and she is showing this to by shaking her head frequently, licking her mouth, not eating, and not drinking. It's very concerning when a cat won't eat or drink, and I would take her into a vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms, and can treat her for it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Bella to a vet for a full exam. She may have something stuck in her mouth, like a string, or she could have a bad tooth. Cats that don't eat can get sick very quickly. Good luck and kisses to Bella!

Poor Pippy! Yes, it certainly sounds like she's sick - shaking is often a sign of pain or discomfort in cats, and not eating or drinking is also a very non-specific sign of illness. Unfortunately, these are very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost anything, so it would be best to have Pippy examined by a vet as soon as you are able to. He/she can do a thorough exam to check for any areas where she might be painful, and can also do blood work and x-rays if needed to help determine the problem.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ringo. It sounds like she could have some oral pain which could be associated with a tooth ache or in cats inflammation of her gums and teeth known as stomatitis. I would recommend that you have Ringo evaluated if you notice excessive drooling, preference for wet food over dry food, constantly licking lips, chattering, or any foul smell from his mouth. It sounds like Sissy is sick. Her symptoms could be caused by dental disease, systemic illness, infection, or injury. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. I'd have her seen by a vet today to have this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

If Coco is nauseated from something, it is difficult to say for sure the cause just based on the symptoms. Coco may have a systemic disease or infection going on that needs antibiotic therapy. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Coco so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having his blood tested to be on the safe side as well. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Why is my cat drooling, has mouth sores, and won't eat or drink?
Cats can develop something called gingivostomatitis as well as feline oral resoptive lesions. These are both very painful and require antibiotics and sometimes steroids as well as dental procedures to correct. Also if there's any possibility she chewed something like electric cord or plant that can calls the signs as well. I recommend Dusk be checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible. This is to prevent her from becoming dehydrated and malnourished from not eating. Do not give her any human medications as they are very toxic to cats and I'll make the situation worse.

I’m sorry to hear about your Dad, and that your kitty isn’t feeling herself. What you describe concerns me About possible back pain, or something called hyperesthesia. This is where cats are very over sensitive on their back, some people think this may actually be seizure activity. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon.
