What's this lump above my senior cat's eye causing pressure?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 5 months old | 14 lbs

Lump above cats eye, between the base of the ear, and the eye. 13 years old. No signs of discomfort. Appears to be putting pressure on the eye. 3rd eyelid is visible. Lump is not discolored and appears to be under the skin. What could the lump be?

Poor Sunny! Since the lump seems to be changing the orientation of his eye, this indicates that it is either occupying space within his skull or is putting pressure on the cranial nerves going to the eye. Possible causes of lesion include a benign or malignant mass, abscess, fungal infection, among others. Even though Sunny seems comfortable, this type of lesion is likely causing some degree of discomfort or pain. Animals are generally pretty good at masking signs of pain as a natural defense mechanism. At this point, I recommend taking Sunny to his vet for evaluation and treatment of the underlying issue. I hope that all goes well!

What are these growths under my senior cat's eye? Are they normal?

These could be benign tumors or they could be malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. My senior cat has a skin-colored lump near his eye. Is it serious?

Hello! This is probably a small cyst or pimple-like structure, but given the age of Jak, I do recommend that he gets checked out by a vet sometime soon to be sure it isn't a cancerous lump. At the vet's office, they will give Jak a full exam, and possibly take a sample of cells from the lump with a small needle to look at under the microscope (called a fine needle aspirate, or FNA). This well help the vets see if the lump is something that can be watched, or if it needs to come off. Good luck, and I hope Jak's lump turns out to be nothing to worry about!

My senior cat's eye pupil is changing; another has a zit-like bump.

Hello. In terms of your cats, the first one with the eye getting bigger than the other really needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Glaucoma is a very serious condition and in order to not lose vision in the eye you want to treat it right away. This is also a very painful condition. The other cat, with a bump that looks like a zit, could just be a sebaceous cyst. It is always best to get it checked out, however if it isn't growing or changing, or causing your cat issues, you can monitor it for now and have it seen at your next appointment with your vet. You'll want to visit you local Veterinarian as soon as possible. It could be that your pet has a cyst, abcess, or tumor that's affecting her sinus cavity. The sooner the better. The sinus region is delicate and can be difficult to heal.

Without knowing the nature of the lump it is impossible to advise - some masses are abscesses and respond to antibiotics but with many tumors surgery or chemotherapy would be recommended. A full check up and possibly a needle biopsy would be recommended

My senior cat has a growing, sensitive eye bump. Should it be removed?

Hello. This is very likely a benign tumor. I have a personal cat that has almost the exact same tumor on his chin that I am watching, too. But this is awful close to the eye, & if it gets any bigger, it may rub on the cornea. If you were my client, I would recommend removal. At 13, if your cat is relatively healthy with no underlying problems seen on bloodwork, then the surgery should go very smoothly. I would consider having it removed soon.
