Is secondhand smoke harmful to kittens? How to protect them?

If Mika has asthma, bronchitis, or some other chronic respiratory condition, then this could be aggravated by exposure to the cigarette smoke. But if she's healthy with no pre-existing issues, I would not expect a few days of secondhand smoke exposure to cause any significant problems.

To my knowledge there have yet to be any studies on the use of marajuana around cats. Cats however, have been affected by second hand smoke in the same ways that humans are. It is therefore not a good idea to smoke in the same room as a pet. It is a safer choice to smoke outside of the home or out of an open window.

Prevention is key: keeping Max out of the second hand smoke is the best thing you can do to prevent future problems. Pets can develop the same issues as children can, including bronchitis and asthma from being in second hand smoke. It takes a very long time for signs to be apparent, as the body continuously fights the inhaled substances. Cats can indeed get lung cancer from inhaled smoke, and other respiratory problems, just like children. Passive smoking is just as dangerous for pets as it is for children. When I went to vet school we did a post mortem on a cat that had black lungs from passive smoking. When symptoms/signs appear, there is usually irrepairable damage. It is best to make sure the cat gets exposed as little as possible to smoke. Best keep the house ventilated as much as possible , so the smoke does not linger in the house.

If he was not in the same room, then his risk of inhaling smoke is decreased. It is the same risk as a human child inhaling second-hand smoke. The best thing from here on out is to only smoke outside and don't have your dog in the same area when you smoke. If he seems to have an increased breathing rate or coughing, it is a good idea to have him examined by a vet.

The smoke can travel throughout the house even if you smoke beside the kitchen hood, and there is the potential Heisenberg can come into the kitchen while you are smoking and get exposure there. Cigarette smoke isn't good for dogs, so to be safe, I'd recommend smoking only outside. Best of luck!

Clinical signs of marijuana toxicosis in cats include drooling, increased locomotor activity (e.g. wandering aimlessly, spontaneous jumping behavior), sedation, depression, anxiety, head bobbing/weaving, swaying from side to side, disorientation, vocalization, agitation, aggression, drinking excessively, difficulty swallowing, sneezing, not eating, seizures, diarrhea, and vomiting. Please monitor her carefully for the next 12-24 hours. If you notice any severe symptoms you will need to take her to your veterinarian. I cannot say how long it will be in her system as I do not know how much she inhaled. My guess would be less than 12 hours for one episode of direct inhalation but each individual animal is different in how they react (just like humans).
