Can second-hand smoke from another room harm my chihuahua's health?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 7.5 lbs

Hello, I am really concerned, we have a 1.5 yrs old chihuahua and we have been smoking in the bathroom all his life. He never comes in he is never in the same room we smoke but I feel terrible. We stopped smoking in the house a couple of days ago but I have terrible remorse about the harm we may have already caused. Do you think he already may have suffered some consequences?

If he was not in the same room, then his risk of inhaling smoke is decreased. It is the same risk as a human child inhaling second-hand smoke. The best thing from here on out is to only smoke outside and don't have your dog in the same area when you smoke. If he seems to have an increased breathing rate or coughing, it is a good idea to have him examined by a vet.
