What's the best way to safely clean my newborn orphan kitten?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can use a warm wet wash cloth with a small amount of dish soap or pet shampoo on it and gently wash Ozzy's head and rinse off with clean warm water being careful around the eyes. I hope this helps!

I would recommend getting a scale and weighing the kitten, which will help you assess its age by size and determine how much should be fed. As far as insects I am not sure what type of insects you are talking of, a photo may be helpful. For fleas we will sometimes bathe very carefully with dawn dish soap to kill fleas and comb them out, being careful to keep kitty warm and dry quickly so they don't lose body heat.

I would not bathe the kittens (dip in water and use shampoo) but would just use a moist wash cloth (luke warm) and wipe them down. Then give them back to mommy who will lick them dry. Be careful when handling the kittens as they may be very scared and bite, especially if they were not handled before.

Thank you for using PetCoach. Sometimes skin infections can develop in bottle babies because they don't have a mom to groom them. Be sure they are staying clean with no formula, urine or feces on their fur. This may entail daily sponge baths and changing bedding/towels at every feeding. If they do not improve, discuss other things with their veterinarian such as testing for ringworm or parasites. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You are fine bathing Franky! I would use a safe non irritating shampoo like dawn or a baby shampoo. He is a young kitten so bathing him shouldn't be as scary as it would for an adult cat. He will likely just be scared and try to climb out of the tub or climb you. Consider clipping his toe nails before the bath! Good luck!

Hi there and thanks for posting. Kittens can get very cold very easily especially when they are wet and not dried off properly. It appears you are trying to keep them clean and dry which is good. A warm clean towel can help dry them off if they get wet. What is also concerning is if the kittens are not nursing regularly. Very young kittens need to be nursing every hour or so. You may need to get some milk replacer from your local pet store and hand nurse the kittens if mom is distant from them. I hope this helps!
