Is it safe to transport a feral cat with mange to the vet?

There are a couple different kinds of mange so in order to treat it, you need to know what kind it is. The best option would be to trap the cat and get it to the local Humane Society or your vet so they can spay/neuter the cat (mange is passed to offspring), test for mange and then they can dispense the appropriate medication. Hello. I would purchase a medium sized storage tote & coax Minka in. Or, you can place the tote over her, slip the lid underneath & carefully turn the tote right side up. Tape or secure the lid. It you have more than a 10 minute trip to your vet, make sure the tote has ventilation holes punched into it. Once you get to the vet, they should be able to handle her. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Heisenberg. There are two common types of mites that affect dogs. One is called demodex and it naturally lives in the hair follicles of the dog. The dog can experience an overgrowth resulting in a form of mange. The second form is known as sarcoptic mange. This mite is typically spread from wild animals and is highly contagious. I'm assuming this is the type your dog has. Being outside would allow him to potentially spread it to other animals. It is not an airborne disease though. I hope this information helps you!

Hello! The safest way to take the cat to the pet shelter would be to trap it, if at all possible. Feral cat traps are the safest option because they automatically close after the cat enters. A pet carrier or box with some food that you can securely close after the cat enters will also work. Most people use canned cat food or tuna to lure the cat into the trap. A common oral sedative for cats is a drug called Gabapentin that can be mixed with food, but this is a prescribed substance and not one I believe you can purchase over the counter. I also caution that if the cat is very wild, it will still be able to bite and scratch you while sedated, so you will still need to contain the cat in some type of carrier. Cats can carry the Rabies virus, so I want you to to stay safe! The animal shelter may offer some types of traps or sedation drugs to assist you in bringing the cat in. Sarcoptes mites are hard to get rid of. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. 1) You need to move out of your house or apartment for three to four days. Mites that are not on a body cannot survive for more than three days. 2) Your pets need to be treated with an Ivermectin or Dectomax injection (your vet can do this). This will kill the mites on and in your cat's skin. 3) You need to go to your doctor for an exam. he will likely prescribe an ointment, that you will have to rub all over your body, or tablets. Your doctor may have further instructions. All this should help get rid of the scabies. Be aware that even after treatment your skin and your cat's skin will itch for a week or more as the mites die off.

Prior to bringing her into the house with your other cats I would recommend she be evaluated by a veterinarian. You would want her tested for any diseases she could transmit to your cats, such as feline leukemia or feline AIDS. If she has fleas or mites, I would recommend treating her prior to coming home. At the same time, she can have her skin lesion looked at. Finally, I would give her a rabies shot as well. Good luck!

Demodex mange is not contagious so you don't have to worry about the kitten being with other animals. Sarcoptic mange on the other hand, is contagious but it sounds like she doesn't have that. I hope this helps. Best wishes!
