What cleaners should I use to disinfect a cat cage for my kitten?

A wide variety of disinfects will deactivate the common viruses repressible for upper respiratory illness in cats as will steam cleaning. First off, I'm so sorry you recently lost a kitten! An effective disinfectant to feline distemper is bleach. I would use bleach to clean the entire house. You need to get rid of all the kitten's belongs, as they will have the virus on them and it can be passed to any new cat. This includes bedding, toys, and litter boxes. Get all new stuff for the new cat. The most important to way to prevent the next cat from catching is vaccination. I would recommend getting an older cat, around four months of age, who will be fully vaccinated. I hope this helps!

You do not need to wash your hands with bleach. This is really not necessary. While it is true that regular soap and water does not actually kill microorganisms (they create a slippery surface that allows the organisms to "slide off"), antibacterial soaps are typically considered to be "overkill" for most purposes. The exception may be in a hospital where special situations are present (e.g., before invasive procedures, when caring for severely immuno-compromised patients, critical care areas, intensive care nurseries, etc.). Antibacterial agents should be chosen carefully based on their active ingredients and characteristics, and when persistent antimicrobial activity on the hands is desired. So, plain soap and water is fine as long as you follow these guidelines. 1. Remove any rings or other jewelry. 2. Use warm water and wet your hands thoroughly. 3. Use soap (1-3 mL) and lather very well. 4. Scrub your hands, between your fingers, wrists, and forearms with soap for a minimum of 15 seconds. 5. Scrub under your nails. 6. Rinse thoroughly. 7. Dry your hands with a single use towel or air dryer. Other tips include: 1. Cover cuts with bandages and wear gloves for added protection (cuts are very vulnerable to infections). 2. Artificial nails and chipped nail polish have been associated with an increase in the number of bacteria on the fingernails. Be sure to clean the nails properly. 3. The best way.to disinfect is to always wash hands, clean surefaces with a dilute bleach solution, clean or get new litter box, wash any bedding, place sheet over furniturr for now to wash later, and pick up feces right away and wash hands. Once treatment is all done, repeat and recheck fecal sample for testing

Congratulations on your new pet! Physical distance is not as important as actual contact. If your new kitten is in a cage or crate, this still likely allows for the cats to touch each other through the bars. Certain viruses can be transmitted in nasal discharge, saliva, and cats can scratch each other even through small openings. The problem with using clorox wipes is that you still will have to rinse the area as clorox residue can hurt your animal. You can put tape along the cracks for the time being and wipe the area with a wet cloth. I suppose you will have to save up for a new cage bottom or find a plastic bottom that will fit into the tray.

You can use plain vinegar and water in a 50/50 dilution to clean most hard surfaces. Commercial products that are safe to use include Green Works wipes, the Seventh Generation line and the Mrs. Meyer's line of "eco-cleaners".
