Is Revolution safe for newborn kittens and their nursing mom?

Great question! I don't recommend using a flea collar, they aren't very effective and often cause skin problems. You can give her Capstar, which is a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. It is safe to give nursing mothers. Then follow up with Revolution. It's a spot on treatment that is also safe to use on nursing mothers. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house such as Indorex.. Make sure Miss Kitty and her kittens are away from where you sprayed the flea spray until it is completely dry. As for the kittens, they are too young for flea treatment and do not put anything on them. You can gently bathe them in warm water and Dawn dish soap, using a flea comb to get all the fleas out of their fur. Be sure to dry them completely so they don't get cold.

To treat the mites, you can use the topical Revolution. It is labeled as safe for pregnant and nursing queens. It is applied directly to the skin on the back of the neck monthly. Pyrantel is safe to use in nursing queens. Praziquantel should be used with caution. Discuss with your veterinarian. The kittens should be dewormed at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks of age. Pyrantel is safe to use in kittens. Praziquantel should not be used in kittens less than 6 weeks of age.

It is not necessary but probably best to wait until Giardia is completely resolved. REVOLUTION is safe for kittens as young as 8 weeks old so please make sure his age is appropriate before giving the product. I would not recommend using revolution for 3 more weeks. You can administer an oral capstan. This will kill all live fleas for 24 hours. Also, make sure you are treating the environment to help decrease and manage the life cycle

I would not worry about severe reactions as selamectin (Revolution) is an avermectin and can be used after Sentry and Advantage multi without a problem. Avermectins are a different class of acaricide and therefore there will be no overdose when used with the others. Both your kitties should be ok and there should be no adverse reaction re the kittens either.

I'm sorry to hear about your issue with Cheyletiella. They are a bothersome parasite to deal with! Apply Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments (use appropriate dose for your kittens' weight). You can use Frontline Plus as well if you feel you aren't getting the results you wanted at the dosage of Revolution stated above. Fontline Plus can be applied every 2 weeks at the correct dose based off body weight for this problem. You should also use a lime silver dip or topical flea product to clean the kittens.
