How to responsibly rehome my cats and ensure a smooth transition?

Now if they truly did not get along well and the other kitty was trying to harm your older kitty, it is probably best to keep them separate. It is not uncommon for them to miss each other for a bit though this will improve very soon. I think you have made the right choice. Good luck!

The best thing you can do to help this family of cats would be to have your parents contact a local animal control officer, who can rescue these cats and bring them to a shelter so they can get any necessary treatment (deworming, flea treatment, and appropriate food), and be put up for adoption. These cats, especially as strays, are likely not vaccinated and can be dangerous to handle, and can spread diseases amongst themselves but also to humans. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so glad you chose to send him to your gramma. Statistically, a 5YO cat doesn’t have great odds of adoption at a shelter. So that right there should make you feel good that you gave him the best chance possible. While you can never say for sure what will happen outside, many cats transition great to being indoor/outdoor. The fact that he comes in at night will help keep him a bit safer than if he were out all the time. Of course, if he is declawed, I STRONGLY encourage he be indoor only as he’s lost his main defense mechanism. I hope this helps you rest easier about your tough decision. Best of luck to you all.

While I am sure you love her and want to do the best for her, you may want to consider giving her to a rescue to care for. They have the funds to raise her until she can be adopted to a good home to continue her care. I would call around to the local shelter and ask for cat rescue phone numbers. Cats tend to be quite adaptable and able to adjust to a new environment well, so I think Blueberry and her kitten will probably do just fine! Of course, every cat is different - some cats love the extra stimulation and socialization that comes with having other cats in the household, while other cats prefer to live on their own and are stressed by having other animals around. You know Blueberry best and might be the best judge as far as how she'll do. If you're worried about how she'll respond, you could always consider this a "trial run", and let your friend know that if your cats don't seem to be adjusting well, you could take them back to find better arrangements. You should anticipate that the first week or two will be an adjustment period and your cats might do a bit more hiding than usual, and initial encounters with the other household cats will probably include some hissing as they figure each other out - but within a few weeks Blueberry and her kitten should be looking more relaxed and comfortable in their new surroundings. If they are friendly you could trot take some pictures of them yourself and try to put them on social media to find them a home. Also, you could look for a no kill shelter in your area so you know they wont put a time limit on their adoption. I hope this helps!

I know this is a difficult situation and hard decision. Unfortunately, without seeing the conditions of the house and the health of all the cats, it is hard for me to make this decision for you. If you do not think their current situation is a good fit for a forever home, I would bring them home with you. If you think you will have to take them to a shelter, you can either try to find them a different home yourself or let the shelter do that. I hope this helps.
