How to responsibly rehome my cats and ensure a smooth transition?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old

I have two cats that are 1 year old. I have had them all their life. I really don't want to give them away but I feel like it would be better for me and them how do I ensure they get a good home and how do I make the transition easy if I do decide to give them away?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that you are considering giving away your cats. I would advise contacting your vet office and see if they can help you place them. They often have a list of clients seeking pets. Other avenues would involve your local humane society, pet rescue groups, etc. These groups often screen potential adopters and would be a great resource. I know this is very tough for you, but if you get the right people involved, everyone will feel better in the end knowing that they were placed into good homes. Good luck
