Can Petco groomers help my large cat with severe matted fur?

They will be more gentle, it may not look the best, but they will be conscious over her age and fragility. If she can not tolerate it then they can discuss maybe using light sedation. If he isn't grooming as he once did, there may be an underlying medical cause, especially given his age. A physical exam by your veterinarian would be recommended along with blood work to assess major organ function.. If he gets a clean bill of health, you can discuss mild sedation and a clip down with the veterinarian.

I'd also recommend having her seen by a vet. She's stopped grooming herself for a reason, and it could be it's painful for her to groom. Arthritis is common in senior cats. A chronic illness, such as diabetes and kidney disease, could sap a cat's energy and lead them to not grooming. Both of those are common in senior cats. I recommend having her seen by a vet this week, and getting her a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. I hope this helps!

Medical grooming is basically grooming under deep sedation to remove all matted areas, some Petco/Vetco branches might be able to offer this service, you will have to call your local Petco to find out if they do.

If she has a lot of matts, then it's possible that she will, as they can be quite painful to remove. If this is the case, consider talking to your veterinarian, as sedation can be performed safely in his/her office. Most vets will do a "shave-down" on long-haired cats, although it's likely a professional groomer will do a more artistic job.

If she will allow you to shave them (do not use scissors) then great. Other options are traveling groomers that come to your house or scheduling a sedated shave down with your vet. Maybe they can provide an oral sedative before hand so you can catch her and make the car ride less awful. I hope this helps and happy holidays.
