My senior cat has matted fur. Is it safe to sedate him for grooming?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 16 years and 3 months old

My cat is 16 years old and his long hair is matted. He has never had this problem before. He also does not take well to other people. I was wondering if I should take him to a vet and have him sedated and then shaved or because of his age not to put him through this. I asked a pet sitter and she said she would just let it be.

If he isn't grooming as he once did, there may be an underlying medical cause, especially given his age. A physical exam by your veterinarian would be recommended along with blood work to assess major organ function.. If he gets a clean bill of health, you can discuss mild sedation and a clip down with the veterinarian.

If Tom is matted and won't let you brush or shave him, then having him sedated by a veterinarian to be shaved down is a good idea. You can also look in your area for cat groomers as highly experienced ones know how to handle cats and may be able to do it without sedation.
