How to get my Persian cat to sit on my lap or sleep with me?

Some kitties hate being picked up. I have 5 of those. However most of the time they will come (on their own terms) and hop on your lap to be petted. So you may have to wait for that to happen. You can invite your cat to hop on your lap by patting the lap and saying "come" or "hop"...Eventually they will get the idea. Once on your lap, just gently pet or scratch your kitty, so he associates being on your lap with being comfy. Don;t worry, he loves you. He just is not comfortable with being picked up. Try lying on the couch....I bet he will come sooner or later to be with you and lie next or on top of you. He is young and wild...sitting still may also be a problem for him (like a child that cannot sit still in class). So, I suppose, patience is it. You can get some cat nip and put that on your lap....(I know that is cheating...but it might work, too)

Keep in mind that this can take time, and Persians tend to be a little standoffish as a breed (I personally have a male Persian). They can be very selective about giving love, and may not be interested in being lap cats. I would be very affectionate with Mini, scratching her in places she likes (cats typically love to be scratched under the chin). I've found with my Persian that he loves having his little snub nose scratched. Give her lots of treats, and praise her when she comes to you for love.

Your kitties are so cute! Yes it's possible to get Kiki to sleep on your bed, but given she is a young kitten, she may be more interested in playing at night than sleeping. When you go to bed, you can try bringing her in with you and your other cat, and give her treats when she lays down on your bed. That way, she associates your bed with a good thing, and may be more likely to lie down there. Keep in mind that cats and kittens can be finicky about where they sleep, and she may sleep there for a while, then move to a new favorite spot. This is completely normal. As she grows older, she may chose to want to sleep on your bed more, but for now, giving her treats when she is on it will provide a good association with being there and make it more likely she will want to lie on the bed. It takes a lot to train a cat and it is not possible at the age your kitten is. Kitties at this age need to learn to run, play, hunt, fight, climb, clean themselves, etc. They really do not have the mind to learn dog tricks. You will need to wait at least 6 months or even a year before you can start with teaching your cat such commands as sit. Not every cat will be interested in learning this, so she may never be cooperative in that respect. Teaching this command will take a lot of patience, immediate reward with a treat. The cat will need to make the connection between the command and the act. And then the cat will need to want to obey the command. Cats are very independent personalities, so, while your kitty will love you, it is more likely to train you than be trained by you.

Cats are individuals and just like people, they all have different preferences. Not all cats like to held. It likely has nothing to do with loving you. If you want to encourage your cat to like the experience, remember the always be slow and patient. Don’t force the behavior upon your cat or he will have a negative experience and then will rebel against it. A good place to begin is encouraging him to sit quietly in your lap. Once he is comfortable on your lap, he may allow more handling. If he seems otherwise happy, you may be content with meeting him where he is and finding a different way to express affect and bond. I would say that there no secrets or special training for it, but usually they keep this habit forever as it is very rewarding for them and sleeping together is a sign of strong bond and trust. Try putting the bed somewhere else to see whether she likes the bed. She just might not like it. Kitties are funny....give them a cardboard box and they will instantly jump into it and claim it....but give them what we perceive to be a great bed, and they may not like it. If the bed is to serve as her regular sleeping place put it somewhere where she likes to spend a lot of time or feels very safe. She needs to find the bed herself. Cats cannot be told what to do....they are the boss. If your kitty finds the bed comfy and likes it, she will sleep in it. However, your bed is big competition. Raven is beautiful.
