My Persian cat has watery, gooey, black eye discharge. What to do?

I have a Persian as well, and face the same problem you have with Smooshee. Because a Persian's face is so flat, they have a shortened nasal cavity. The result of that if they experience more drainage from their eyes, and it is common in cats and dogs with flatter faces. I also clean my Persian's face daily, and I use Fido's tear stain remover for dogs and cats. I got it at Animates pet store here in New Zealand, and I'm sure you can find that product or something similar in Australia. I find with using that I don't have to clean up Mao's face (my cat) every day, and it helps get rid of the tear stains. I recommend using a product like that. Another thing to consider is that Smooshee could be suffering from chlamydia. Don't worry, you can't get it! It's a bacteria respiratory infection in cats that manifests as conjunctivitis. It can be a chronic condition, and it becomes worse in times of stress. Mao has it as well, and it makes his tear stains worse sometimes. A course of doxycycline can help clear up an outbreak of chlamydia in cats, and you can have Smooshee seen by a vet to see if she does suffer from it as it may help with her tear stain problem.

Some eye discharge and tear staining can be normal, especially in white or other light-furred colors that will show the stain more easily. Many pet stores carry products to help remove the stain and keep the eyes clear. If the discharge becomes green, yellow, or you notice any other symptoms of illness, this could indicate an issue such as a respiratory infection instead, which should be checked out by your vet.

It may be normal drainage but at this point it has caused a skin infection which needs to be treated with antibiotics. there might also be an eye infection there, it's not possible to tell from the picture, but if this is the case Kimber will also need antibiotic eyedrops. bottom line- you need to take him back to the vet in order to get these treatments.

I wouldn't recommend it. If she has eye discharge, I'd recommend using a moistened clean cloth or paper towel (using lukewarm tap water) to wipe it away and then another clean dry one to dry off the area. I'd also recommend talking to her vet to see if there's anything that can be done to help with the discharge. Persians have such compressed eye sockets that the normal amount of tears that every cat has ends up tearing in a Persian. Also because the eyes have more exposure they probably create a little more tear film. Nothing will “fix” this. However, rinsing with isotonic saline can help rinse any debris out and keep the cornea as healthy as possible. I would keep doing that. If the eyes are red or if the discharge is green the. Persians and Himalayan’s can sometimes have a rusty brown eye discharge that looks like blood but isn’t. This may be the same with Aegean cats. Some possible causes of the chronic eye discharge could be viral infections such as a chronic feline herpes viral infection for which VetriScience Lysine immune system supplements may help. Changing the litter to a dust free litter often helps as well. If the discharge is thick and Charlie’s eyes are sometime squinty, a visit to your vet for a fluorescein stain to rule out a corneal ulcer and topical ophthalmic antibiotic drops may be indicated. In the meantime wiping the discharge away with hypoallergenic sensitive skin baby wipes or warm water soaked clean tissues is recommended to keep the discharge from building up and causing dermatitis or raw skin around the eyes. Hi there. Simba could have a bacterial or viral infection, or something within his eyelid that is irritating the eye and causing the discharge. I would recommend having him checked by your vet.
