My cat has worsening brown and yellow eye discharge. What to do?

Most eye problems in cats are due to some upper respiratory viruses, other organisms, and trauma to the eye resulting in corneal scratches, ulcers. Herpes virus, Calicivirus, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma cause most of the common eye problems. I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Your vet can take a history, perform a physical exam, and recommend a diagnostic/treatment plan. Corneal eye stain is usually performed to make sure the cornea is not damaged. Once a diagnosis is made, the eye can be treated properly. The skin problem near the eye is due to the constant moisture draining from the eye. Once the eye problem is addressed, this should heal. Hello. This could be any number of things such as a flare up of a herpes virus very common in cats, or he has as infection, possibly from a small scratch on his cornea, or even a bit on conjunctivitis. Wil should see his veterinarian to make sure there is nothing more serious with the eye, & usually, with the proper treatments & medications, eyes clear up very nicely. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. That lump could represent the site of an infection like a tooth root abscess which could also explain the eye discharge. I highly recommend that you have Simba evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

Many times discharge from the eye in a cat can signal the start of an upper respiratory infection. Other possible causes are a blocked tear duct, allergy, or scratch on the cornea. Because anytime the eye is involved I'm very cautious I'd recommend seeing veterinarian especially if the issue does not resolve by tomorrow. A veterinarian can examine the eye to ensure there is no infection or signs of an upper respiratory infection starting. They can also check to make sure no corneal scratches are present as these can be painful and require antibiotic ointment to treat. Anytime the eye is having an issue it's always best to err on the side of caution and have it checked out. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Simba has a pretty severe upper respiratory infection. He needs antibiotics to help deal with this. I would suggest finding another veterinarian who will treat your kitten properly. I hope Simba is feeling better soon.

Persians have very flat faces, and eye tearing and improper tear drainage due to their face structure. Bacteria causes the discharge to become rust-brown and can stain the face of white or light colored cats. You should clean Simba's face daily to prevent this from happening. You can eye use wipes, sold in pet stores, to keep them free of tears and the build up. You can also use a slightly damp cotton ball one to two times daily to wipe the area around the eyes, removing any dried, crusty tears that have formed overnight. Also have him checked out by a vet to make sure he doesn't have an eye infection, as that can also be cause of excessive eye discharge. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
