My paralyzed cat is incontinent. How do I keep my home clean?

Getting him neutered may decrease his desire to go outside. There are companies that will make small carts or "wheelchairs" for paralyzed pets. It would keep his back end off the ground and prevent injury. It would also make it easier for him to get around the house. Your veterinarian may know of a company or distributor. You can also search online.

That is a very broad question, so let me give you a few ideas and a few websites. First, you need to protect the skin on the rear legs from getting sores. Urine that is left on the skin can be very irritating and cause severe skin wounds. You will need to learn to express the urinary bladder if they are not able to do that themselves. Sometimes that is easy and sometimes it is not. She needs more than a topical cream. She needs systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. Have her examined by your veterinarian today. She may need daily bathing with a medicated shampoo as well. Dry her thoroughly after each bath. You will need to change her diapers more often as well. they may be trapping moisture and keeping urine close to the skin which will result in urine scalding which lads to infection.

You can keep him clean and comfortable and see if the control of his rear legs will return. He may be permanently paralyzed though. I like to support these animals, putting something underneath their stomach if needed, to get them standing with their rear legs underneath in a normal position. If he gets stronger when you have him standing he may improve. Usually they will start to move their legs in a few weeks if they are going to improve. If he remains paralyzed you can purchase or make a cart or wheelchair for him so he can walk around on his own. Kitties can be so naughty post surgery. Although it is not advised to do a full body bath, you can use a waterless shampoo and kitten wipes from your local pet store to get him clean. As long as the inicision site itself stays dry you are ok. Best of luck keeping kitty clean! : ) Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can purchase water-less shampoo and bath his hind end. And yes you can pick him up and snuggle. Just do not put him down. To ensure proper healing follow your Vet's recommendations and have him rechecked for X-rays to be sure he is healing properly. It worries me a bit that he can't urinate on his own. That shouldn't be an issue. I would have an X-ray taken at 4 weeks. Good luck!

Unfortunately the only thing that will prevent this is to take him outside often and/or change his pee pad/diapers regularly and often. Shave the hair around the penis and on his belly in front of the penis and wash the area when he peed on it , at least twice daily, You need to dry the area well and then you can apply plenty of vaseline to keep the urine from coming into contact with the skin. If the inflammation is severe, if there are raw skin lesions or if you cannot completely remove the crusts and masses you will need to take him to a vet to examine him.
