Why does my orange cat have black spots on his nose, lips, and paws?

Yes, we commonly see what we call Lentigo Simplex in orange cats. This should present as small discrete dark (pigmented) areas which it sounds like what you have seen in Bits. These areas tend to enlarge slightly over time and they tend to develop additional ones as they age. They are benign lesions, but they should always be flat. This could actually be normal pigmentation on Phoenix's gums. This can be seen in orange cats, and it's known as lentigo. To be safe, I'd have him checked out by a vet since I can't say for certain without seeing him in person, but if it is lentigo, it's nothing to worry about. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Black pigment or Lentigo are common developments in the mouth of cats as they age. More so in orange cats. That is what I think your last picture shows. The middle picture I can't tell if it is pigment or just some drool that had food in it that dried on the fur. It isn't uncommon to have dark crust at the nose openings. Some cats can have that and not be sick or if they are recovering from an upper respiratory tract infection. If Aphrodite is acting normal and not sneezing excessively I do not think she needs veterinary care. Have a good day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If it is pendulous and mass like I would have him seen. If it is flat like a freckle then it could be a normal pigmentation. Orange cats do develop black freckles in their mouthes. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for using PetCoach! Sorry to hear about Pumpkin but I think this is probably normal. Not sure how old she is, but Orange tabby cats will be born without dark pigmentation around their eyes, nose, lips, and mouth but over time, they will start to develop dark spots of pigmentation. This could be lentigo, which is a pigmented spot that is harmless to cats. Croissant is a young cat, and for it to be cancer would be rare in a cat his age. I would keep an eye on this spot for now. If it get bigger or starts to bother him, then I would have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hello, as you may now cancer can only be diagnosed by looking at the cells of the area in question. Certainly, we can get a suspicion for cancer by assessing the gross appearance of the area in question. This means that although looking at Blue's nose I don't think it looks very aggressive to be considered a cancer, we are unable to tell unless we sample that area. Cats can get pigmentation changes with age, so this may very well be a normal change associated with his age and nothing you need to be concerned with. I would recommend monitoring the area for progression of this pigmentation change or any evidence of mass, ulcer, or thickening of the nose which would be more concerning for a cancer.
