Is it possible for an older cat to lose all its teeth at once?

It sounds like Rider likely has severe dental disease, as it is not normal for teeth to just fall out like that. Dental disease may not be visible on the outside, but can cause teeth to fall out as described. A dental cleaning and oral exam performed by your veterinarian while Rider is under anesthesia can help treat any disease present, and will allow your vet to check and see if the tooth that fell out left any pieces behind. Dental disease can be extremely painful, but cats will often continue to eat and drink despite the pain. If left untreated the infection from dental disease may get much worse and spread to elsewhere in the body, causing further pain, so it's important that you have Rider seen by a vet.

Yes, losing teeth can definitely make Tippy less playful. This could be painful to him, and he may be suffering from dental disease causing him to lose his teeth. It's not normal for a 5 year old cat to lose teeth, so I would have Tippy seen by a vet first thing in the morning. If he is suffering from dental disease, he may benefit from a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing.

From the pictures i can indeed confirm that there doesn't seem to be an obvious gum disease and the teeth look normal as well, nevertheless some cats lose some of their teeth quite early in life, sometimes due to bad chewing habits, sometimes randomly.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am not sure what your question is but if you are worried about him losing a tooth, it is not uncommon. I would recommend the vet take a look at his teeth to see if any more need to come out. It is ok if Carter loses teeth because he can still eat without them. But if there are more diseased teeth he needs to have them extracted to prevent pain and further decay. If the vet says his teeth look good, I would recommend daily brushing with cat toothpaste to prevent further tartar build up. Good luck and kisses to Carter!

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear the Aevie has a loose canine tooth. Even though her teeth looked great two months ago, most dental disease occurs underneath the gum line. Therefore, the gums and teeth may have looked great but there may have been the beginning of disease under the gum line. I recommend taking Aevie to your veterinarian to get another assessment and likely discuss a dental cleaning with dental radiographs and extractions of that canine too plus any additional teeth that need to be extracted. I see you have a snaggletooth kitty! If you mean the little incisor on the right, do nothing, it will fall out by itself. She has already lost a canine tooth, which, in itself is not a problem, however I would have the veterinarian look at her teeth soon. She may have excessive tartar, gingivitis and /or FORL (lesions on the tooth roots) which make the teeth fall out and are painful. Tank may need a teeth cleaning under anesthesia to make sure her mouth is healthy again and not lose more teeth. Gingivitis and tartar can also lead to detrimental bacteria entering the blood stream and causing heart and kidney disease. So dental cleaning is important when there are indications of dental disease.

One of the major causes of drooling is dental disease, and if teeth are falling out then I imagine there is a fair bit of tartar and redness. We do have to consider Elvis's age though, and I wouldn't be rushing to anaesthetise a 16 year old to clean his teeth unless he was really suffering. If he is still managing to eat I would let him be, if you think he is in pain you can take him to the vet and try pain relief and antibiotic shots. You could try brushing his teeth if you want to. Finally kidney issues are common in older cats and can cause drooling so you could have his bloods checked, however I suspect it is the teeth.
