My nursing cat has diarrhea and a red bottom. What should I do?

Mama cat could just be stressed from feeding the kittens. You can consider giving her Metamucil to help harden her stools or a bland diet of boiled chicken or tuna and rice OR Purina en gastrointestinal for a few days to see if this resolves the diarrhea. However if mama cat gets worse and becomes lethargic and not eating, or if the diarrhea continues for more than 48-72 hrs then it may be best to get her seen by your vet for more investigation (i.e. Fecal exam) as to what is causing her diarrhea.

Given the amount of treatments that have been tried, a fecal exam and possibly blood work would be recommended to help identify the underlying cause and guide approach. Prescription gastrointestinal diets can help whilst awaiting results

I see a little bit of red but not a big amount. I’d keep an eye on her for now. If you keep seeing red in her poop or it gets worse, then take her back into the vet ASAP. Poor kitten! I think you're in the right for trying to get in sooner to have her checked out by your vet. If she is bleeding a lot or is having severe diarrhea or vomiting, then seeking out care from another vet or even an emergency clinic may be a good idea. Keeping her bottom clean and dry can help, and feeding a bland meal of some boiled chicken may help as well until you can be seen.

I would wash it gently with a mild soap and rinse very well. If you have any a and d ointment or other diaper rash cream available then a very small amount of that applied and rubbed in well is appropriate. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. They probably got it from the mother. I recommend that you have them evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

He does look very sore and any diarrhoea which lasts more than 2 days in young kittens should be treated as they can rapidly become dehydrated and malnourished if not absorbing food and water sufficiently. I would get a stool sample checked for parasites and also start him on a specialist, highly digestible intestinal diet for 3-5days followed by a good quality kitten food introduced gradually. Probiotics can also be helpful
