My new mom cat had kittens 3 days ago and won't eat. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Menace is not eating, she needs to see a veterinarian asap. I recommend taking her and the kittens to be evaluated. She may not be producing enough milk which could lead to dehydration or malnutrition of the kittens. The vet can assess why Menace isn't eating and make recommendations if the kittens should be bottle raised or are ok to stay with their mom. Good luck, I hope she's better quickly.

Poor girl. If she is not eating food, then this is an indicator that she may have an infection. At this age, most of the kittens should be almost weaned off of her, so it is ok if she is not producing a lot of milk. You can start giving them kitten formula mixed with soft canned food at this point and help them wean completely off of mom. It could just be that she isn't quite sure what to do. Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and a litter box available, as well as a comfortable place to put the kittens. If she isn't eating, seems lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103 or under 100, then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian to see what could be going on.

Just like humans, there are many reasons Lana may not be interested in food and it is impossible to know without a physical exam. It's possible there are still kittens inside the uterus. Uterine infections are also possible. Unfortunately, both of these can be fatal without treatment. It's also possible this is something like a less severe infection but one cannot know without an exam. Have her examined today and bring the other kittens with her. If she is not feeding the kittens, you will need to take over. Spaying pets has significant health benefits, helps to control the problem of pet over population and Lana may have up to 30 kittens in a year. That's a lot of cats to care for. Luna may be feeling a bit stressed out if there are a lot of other people or pets in the house and may be staying near her kittens for protection and safety. Giving her some space to relax and care for the kittens as well as keeping curious children and pets away from them can help. You can also try placing her food and water near the area she is hiding so she has the ability to get the food and water she needs while nursing her kittens. You do want to make sure all the kittens are doing OK by checking on them every so often, however too much can increase stress on mom and babies. If Luna doesn't improve or you see any signs of illness from mom or babies, scheduling a vet check is best.

Make sure the kittens stay warm. If they are not nursing well or she is not producing milk then you can bottle feed them to help. She should be fed kitten food as it has more calories and nutrients to help her keep her weight up and produce enough milk

I am afraid it sounds as if Jewel has picked up an infection, or she is just worn out from nursing & cleaning up after the kittens. I would not let her nurse the kittens, to decrease contamination if this is contagious, & to prevent a further drain on her resources. It would be best to have her seen by your veterinarian, not only to start treatment for her, if necessary, but to hopefully prevent the kittens from becoming ill. Cats can not go very long before they become even sicker. 3 days without food, & she could be in trouble. The kittens are old enough to eat on their own. Encourage them to do so until you see how Jewel is faring. I hope she is feeling better soon. Take care.
