My male cat is trying to pee but nothing comes out, what should I do?

There is always a worry with male cats about a urethral blockage when they show this behavior. It's good you know to have him seen by a vet for this. If you see him trying to pee but nothing is coming out, he's yowling when trying to pee, his pee appears very bloody, he's lethargic, vomiting, refusing to eat, and/or he is licking his genitals a lot, you must take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, you can wait until tomorrow. Feed him wet food and add water to it to flush his bladder. I hope this helps!

Oh dear, poor Prince! I'm extremely concerned that he is vocalizing and has been in and out of the litter box. As a male cat, he's at an increased risk of developing a urethral obstruction, which is a blockage that prevents him from emptying his bladder. Some cats can develop partial blockages, which allow them to still dribble small amounts of urine, but even this are a major problem. If Prince has a urethral obstruction, this is an immediately life-threatening emergency. You should take him to an emergency veterinarian right away for treatment. This is an emergency and you need to take Duke to a veterinarian or PetER right now or he will get so ill that he might die. This is not a urinary tract infection primarily but very likely an obstructed urethra caused by crystals or bladder stones. Please take him to a Pet ER now, do not wait. Penicillin will not clear this up.

If he is blocked, he cannot wait until tomorrow. A urinary blockage is a veterinary emergency and requires immediate treatment. Left untreated, toxins will build up in his blood threatening his life. Do whatever you can to have Precious examined and unblocked tonight. Go to the nearest veterinary ER. There is nothing you can do at home to help him.

Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. Poor Tony! He could definitely be experiencing a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or even a blocked urethra and unable to urinate. Since he is crying and hissing, I am really concerned that he is hurting and possibly unable to urinate. I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to check his bladder and his urine and get him started on the proper treatment plan to help him feel better. If a blocked cat is left untreated, it can cause serious damage to his kidneys. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!

I would not advise to wait and monitor. Male cats like Lio can develop urethral obstruction which requires sedation, urinary catheter placement and 1-5 days of hospitalization. It would be best to get him checked out ASAP. If you can catch it early, there is a better chance he will not obstruct. He will need a urinalysis and possibly culture and ultrasound/radiographs (depending on doctor preference). The doctor will prescribe medications for pain, inflammation and possibly a diet to break down urine crystals. I hope this helps.
