My male cat has difficulty urinating. What home remedies can I try?

Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. Hello! Leopold could have a partial urinary blockage, which is an emergency! Ideally, take him to see his vet ASAP, so they can check him over. If his bladder is not emptying properly, he will need to be catheterized. Male cats of this age rarely get bladder infections, so a partial blockage is much much likely. Cats get crystals in their urine, which plug up their system. I hope he feels better soon!

Poor guy. He likely has a urinary tract infection or cystitis (inflamed bladder usually due to stress). I would recommend taking him to your vet for a urine test to determine which is present so that he is treated appropriately. As long as he is otherwise acting normal and able to urinate at will, then it isn't considered an emergency at this point. Getting him seen on Monday or the day after should be ok. If he is blocked, he cannot wait until tomorrow. A urinary blockage is a veterinary emergency and requires immediate treatment. Left untreated, toxins will build up in his blood threatening his life. Do whatever you can to have Precious examined and unblocked tonight. Go to the nearest veterinary ER. There is nothing you can do at home to help him.

None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You can find in the market different kind of diet in order to change the PH of the urine and eventually dissolve the crystals/stones. If the kidney stones are not dissolvable or are too big, surgical removal could be the second option. Unfortunately male cats may suffer from blockage (partial or complete) of the urinary tract, which is a medical/surgical emergency condition.
