My male cat has a urinary blockage. Is this an emergency? What now?

My male cat is having an issue with blockage and I can't get him to the vet until tomorrow. What can I do to alleviate his pain?

If he is blocked, he cannot wait until tomorrow. A urinary blockage is a veterinary emergency and requires immediate treatment. Left untreated, toxins will build up in his blood threatening his life. Do whatever you can to have Precious examined and unblocked tonight. Go to the nearest veterinary ER. There is nothing you can do at home to help him.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear about Xerxes! Unfortunately, a urinary blockage is a serious and immediately life threatening issue, so while it may sound extreme, your vet is right - Xerxes needs to be sedated to have a urinary catheter placed in order to allow him to urinate again, and then these cats generally require a few days of hospitalization while their urinary tract recovers or they are likely to re-block in the next few hours or days. The most expensive part of treatment is usually the sedation and un-blocking - so you could talk to your vet about the option of simply unblocking Xerxes and then treating him as an outpatient, and keep your fingers crossed that he doesn't re-block (you'd have to carefully monitor his urine output at home), but unfortunately that probably wouldn't dramatically decrease the cost, as the really essential part of treatment is the sedation and unblocking. Without doing that as a bare minimum, Xerxes will remain unable to urinate and will almost certainly die from painful complications such as kidney failure or a ruptured bladder and resulting uroabdomen (urine free in the abdomen). We vets don't like the fact that sometimes this means euthanizing cats for obstructions - but if a cat can't be treated due to the cost concerns, euthanasia is a more humane option than leaving the condition untreated.

My male cat has a UTI and can't pee. What should I do right away?

Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. My cat had a urinary blockage. Why was euthanasia the best option?

A urinary blockag, or urtheral obstruction, is a problem almost exclusively reserved for male cats. Compared to female cats, males have a much thinner and narrower urethra - the tube that drains urine from the bladder through the penis (in male cats). This predisposes the urethra to blockages when plugs of inflammatory material (such as white blood cells and mucus), as well as crystals or small bladder stones, become lodged in the urethra preventing the passage of urine. When the urethra is blocked and the cat has filled its bladder to capacity, the kidneys will stop producing more urine because there is no where for it to go. With "kidney shut down" the body is no longer able to remove toxins from the blood or maintain proper fluid balances and electrolytes. The leads to kidney failure and eventually death of the cat. Urinary blockages must be treated aggressively in order for the cat to survive. Typically, a catheter is passed into the bladder, through the urethra, in order to flush out the urinary blockage or force the plug back into the bladder. Then the cat's bladder is drained and flushed through the catheter. Cats with urinary blockages are hospitatlized for up to 72+ hours to receive intravenous fluids, pain medications, and medications to reduce inflammation and address infection. Prognosis is very good for cats that are treated appropriately and in a timely manner, but treatment can be expensive, especially for cats that have already gone into kidney failure. If you cannot afford the cost of emergency care or the cat is already moribund, then euthanasia may be the kindest option.

My cat has painful urinary issues, can't get to vet, what to do?

This unfortunately is very concerning and is quite possibly a medical emergency situation for your pet Nacho. Nacho cannot be helped st home because it is possible he may have a urinary blockage and in need or a urinary catheter to provide him relief. Urinary tract infections are 1) not common in male cats and 2) Dont cause a lot of vocalization in the cat, therefore I suspect a urinary blockage is the actual culprit. I am hopeful that you can find someone to help you with Nacho so that you can take him in for life saving procedures. If she is unable to pass any urine she needs to be seen immediately to prevent bladder rupture and may need a catheter to relieve the pressure and prevent nerve and muscle weakness. This is an emergency and should not be managed at home and causes severe pain and discomfort with potential life threatening complications

There is always a worry with male cats about a urethral blockage when they show this behavior. It's good you know to have him seen by a vet for this. If you see him trying to pee but nothing is coming out, he's yowling when trying to pee, his pee appears very bloody, he's lethargic, vomiting, refusing to eat, and/or he is licking his genitals a lot, you must take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, you can wait until tomorrow. Feed him wet food and add water to it to flush his bladder. I hope this helps!
