My male cat wants to mate. Should I let him breed before neutering?

Oh dear! I hate to disagree with your vet, but there's no evidence whatsoever that breeding is good for a cat's health. In fact, it opens them up to a much higher risk of disease and injury - so I would recommend having him neutered now, rather than waiting. If your current vet doesn't want to do the procedure, I would suggest checking with another vet in your area to see if you can find someone who will go ahead and neuter him. At 5 months old, he's plenty old enough to go ahead and have the surgery.

She will probably not let him come around her. A male cats penis has little barbs or spines on it so it won't be comfortable for her to let him mate her. Most intact male cats will spray to mark territory, so that is great that he is so well mannered. And, if there is no hormonal signal from a female cat being in heat, he will not waste energy trying to mate with her. If he continues to be chilled, then he does not need to be neutered. Bringing an intact female into the house will likely cause aggression issues between them, so you'd have to keep them separated when she is in heat. If you only want to breed one of them, then I would have the other neutered before bringing in the female. I hope this helps.
