What long-term anti-nausea meds are safe for cats on chemotherapy?

The best anti-nausea medications are prescription, and I always prefer to use injectible anti-nausea medications because they work faster and better. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to let them know that Joey is still nauseated and see what medication they would recommend. Good luck! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Trixie. Cerenia typically provides 24-48 hours of nausea relief in cats. So I would give it to her approximately 12 hours before her next dose of chemotherapy. This will give the medication plenty of time to start working as well as provide relief for many hours afterwards. I hope this information helps!

Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication, not a true appetite stimulant. A decrease in appetite is not a common side effect but was occasionally noted in safety studies. I think it’s more likely that Trixie’s decreased appetite is due to her disease rather than the medication. If you’re concerned you could ask your vet about other anti-nausea options but Cerenia is usually the most effective medication in cats.

Couple of concerns here. Were you given an option of referral to obtain a definitive diagnosis? Differentiation of these diseases requires biopsy. Did your pet have an ultrasound? Also having a chemotherapy medication made in to a liquid is a big safety concern unless a pet has a feeding tube. Were you counseled about safe drug and urine/fecal handling with this drug? Also has your kitty had blood monitoring with this drug for safety? There are typically some other things we do with cats with GI disease but this is case dependent. Also the dosing for chlorambucil is different for different cats. What would really be best, if you feel that you need more help beyond your vet, you could request referral to a specialist (either an internist or an oncologist). Doxorubicin is a very effect chemotherapy drug but, with all medications, there can be side effects. Since your vet knows your cat's entire medical history, he/she is the best person to guide you with advice on the best treatment regime for your cat. I am assuming that your vet believes that this drug is needed to help treat your cat's cancer and the benefits outweigh any risks associated with the drug. Your vet will need to monitor his kidney values closely for any changes while taking the drug and discontinue, if needed. So sorry that your cat has a tumor and I really hope that he goes into remission.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! A decrease in appetite is not unusual in cases of cats with cancers and on certain medications. Definitely keep your vet in the loop about where her appetite stands/how she is doing eating as they may want to adjust/add medications. Some cats enjoy the food warmed up, so you can try warming it in the microwave (always check temperature before feeding to ensure not too hot). Some prefer wet food, some kibble, some like kibble that has been soaked to soften it. Trying a buffet to give varieties to choose from may help you discover what she finds appealing.

If the metronidazole isn't working I would ask for tylan and Hill's i/d to help control the diarrhea. The drug can cause GI upset seen as vomiting and diarrhea. You can discuss trying a lower dose with your Vet when they call you back. Lowering the dose will make it less effective against the lymphoma. I wish you the best!
