Why is my cat's appetite low after taking Cerenia for nausea?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 9 months old | 11.5 lbs

Hi trixie just had her 2nd dose of Leukeran (1 every 2wks) & takes prednisolone everyday for a recent small cell lymphoma diagnosis. The day of her Leukeran and for a few days after she takes a half a cerenia every 24hrs for nausea and I noticed her appetite changed right after giving her cerenia yesterday, but before the Leukeran. I read cerenia can cause lack of appetite. If it’s meant to help nausea from the Leukeran so she’ll eat better why does it also cause lack of appetite? any advice?

Cerenia is an anti-nausea medication, not a true appetite stimulant. A decrease in appetite is not a common side effect but was occasionally noted in safety studies. I think it’s more likely that Trixie’s decreased appetite is due to her disease rather than the medication. If you’re concerned you could ask your vet about other anti-nausea options but Cerenia is usually the most effective medication in cats.
