Why is my cat's appetite low after taking Cerenia for nausea?

Lethargy can be a side effect of an anti-nausea injection such as Cerenia, so that could be why Sunshine is just sleeping. I would monitor her for now, and see if she will eat when she wakes up. You can try to tempt her to eat by offering her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones). If she is still refusing to eat in the morning, I would bring her back into the vet.

I am guessing the injection given was Cerenia. Side effects are uncommon with the use of this medication, but the most commonly noted side effects were: drooling, drowsiness, diarrhea, and appetite loss. I would be worried and I think he needs to get back to the vet. Were any x-rays or blood testing done? If not, that needs to be done to figure out what is going on. This sounds like it could be something more serious going on. If it was just a simple upset stomach he should be feeling MUCH better after that injection and not sleeping for 10 hours. I would be worried.

These are not side effects of the medications, these are symptoms related directly to the medical condition that caused the vomiting in the first place. if by tomorrow you see no improvement you will need to take her back to the vet.

Animals with vestibular disease often feel "motion sick" - having something similar to vertigo. So this is great for that. It also helps settle the stomach which helps with appetite. Mirtazapine is a true appetite stimulant. Even with both of these, the balance apparatus is very mad and so falling over may still happen. I recommend bringing slightly warmed wet food to his face a few times daily to encourage eating. If no improvement in the vestibular signs within a week, I recommend a CT scan of the head to look for inner ear infection or, heaven forbid, a tumor. Vaseline is ok for paw pads, though olive oil or coconut oil is even better. To be honest, most cracked paw pads are not painful and do not need treatment. I'd recommend an over the counter laxatone product for the hair balls, along with frequent brushing. Omega 3 fatty acid supplements can help with the dandruff. Best wishes to you and Katniss.

So I would give it to her approximately 12 hours before her next dose of chemotherapy. Entyce is a new appetite stimulant that may be tried in replace of the mirtazapine. It is only approved for use in dogs, but has been used off label in cats. You can consider switching to a potassium sparing diuretic such as spironolactone which may allow him to come off of the potassium supplement. I would avoid the ginger at this point and try other options as there is no way to know if it will interfere with his cardiac drugs. I typically try one thing at a time so that I know what is helping. I hope this information helps!

Although uncommon, cetirizine can cause sedation, lethargy, and lack of appetition animals. Please call your vet and discuss the clinical signs that he is experiencing. Your vet may want to switch medications or might want to see your cat to make sure there isn't something else causing the problem.
