Is my 8-week-old kitten's wet food amount okay with free-fed dry?

Hello. That actually does not sound too unusual. You can certainly offer her the canned twice daily ( my house kitty gets a spoonful morning & evening ), & then he is free to pick at the dry all day. MOST cats are good at self regulating & will not eat too much to become obese, but this is something to watch for as Aspen grows older. The bags usually over estimate the amount of food animals need. I would recommend feeding about 75% of what's on the bag/instructions IF that's the only thing your cat is eating. If they are eating half wet and half dry, decrease the amount proportionally. Another (easier) approach, is to ask your veterinarian for a recommended calorie count for each cat. Most adult cats need about 200 calories per day and young, intact cats need anywhere from 2-3 times this amount.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do recommend using the food chart that comes with the food. It is hard to make growing puppies and kittens overweight. If they are finishing the food and are not overweight then the volume of food is correct. If they are too skinny feed more but spread the meals out so it is less food per meal. If you think they are overweight cut back. Growing babies need more calories. I wish you the best!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He should be eating about 275 - 300 calories per day to continue to grow at a healthy weight. It is not based on the volume of food but more so based on the amount of calories in the food you feed him. This information should be in the back of the bag or can you feed him or possibly online. Congratulations on adding the two kittens to your family!!! I always say two kittens are better than one as they play with each other so well! I generally do not limit the food on kittens this age. It is important to remember that they are forming their eating habits now so offering both canned and dry is a good thing. Certainly they are showing a preference but in general, you don't want them to become picky. I would split one small can of kitten food between both kittens at this time. I would leave the dry food out at all times for them to munch on through out the day. Make sure to be offering a high quality kitten dry food. In general, kittens don't struggle with their weight but if you notice they are starting to get heavy, then you will need to moderate food. At this age, the kittens likely eat about 1/2-3/4 cup of food per kitten per day. This will decrease when they become adults (kittens are growing so they eat more). Adult cats eat generally 3/4 - 1 cup total per day. I hope you enjoy your new kittens! Please post again if you have any further questions!

For an average healthy weight 0.5 kg kitten with an expect 4-5 kg adult weight the caloric intake should be about 150 calories. However, for every 0.5kg that the kitten gains the caloric intake increases by about 50 calories . So at 1 kg he should be offered about 200 calories, and at 1.5 kg he should be offered about 250 calories. Once he is an adult and has stopped growing the caloric intake usually decreases to about 250-300 per day. This is average. Some require more and some less. Hello. At this point in your kittens lives, I would continue to allow them to free feed as they are still growing & maturing. If, after they are 1-2 years of age, they begin to get a little too heavy, you may need to restrict access to their food, but it is not necessary nor advised now.
