Is free feeding dry food safe for my 4-month-old kittens?

Hello. That actually does not sound too unusual. You can certainly offer her the canned twice daily ( my house kitty gets a spoonful morning & evening ), & then he is free to pick at the dry all day. MOST cats are good at self regulating & will not eat too much to become obese, but this is something to watch for as Aspen grows older. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pocky. At this age, it is fine to free feed him. By 4-5 months though you will need to start measuring his food. He can still eat when he wants as cats prefer to graze throughout the day. You will just need to be aware of how much he is consuming to prevent him from becoming overweight. Hello. Pretty much this is good advice. A tiny young kitten needs to eat small meals frequently, so it is best to leave food available all day. You can offer treats & wet food 1-2 times daily. If Benji continues to grow & shows signs of obesity as she ages, then you can manage her meals, but it is almost impossible to overfeed a growing kitten. How lovely of you to take on these kittens! Yes, you are correct they should be on kitten food and should stay on kitten food until they are one year of age. Purina kibble is a great food, just get the kitten version. To switch them to it, mix 75% old food and 25% new food, and feed them that for 3-4 days. After that time period, give them 50% old food and 50% new food mixed together. Again, feed that for 3-4 days. Then mix together 25% old food and 75% new food, and feed for 3-4 days. Finally, then give them 100% new food. This will help slowly transition them to the kitten food. If you see diarrhea at any point, add a little less new food and a little more old food to settle their stomach. Once the diarrhea is gone, continue the transition. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do recommend using the food chart that comes with the food. It is hard to make growing puppies and kittens overweight. If they are finishing the food and are not overweight then the volume of food is correct. If they are too skinny feed more but spread the meals out so it is less food per meal. If you think they are overweight cut back. Growing babies need more calories. I wish you the best!

Hi there. I would recommend feeding her a high quality kitten food until she is 9 months old. You can feed her canned food and dry food. There are several great brands of kitten food available, I like Royal Canin kitten food, Natural Balance and Wellness. I hope that helps.
