My kitten throws up nightly and cries. Does she need a vet visit?

If the kitten is vomiting, hiding, or otherwise acting ill, it would be best to bring it to a vet ASAP. It is very possible the kitten is ill, has eaten something it shouldn't or may be injured. If the kittens or mom are not vaccinated, illness and disease can also be easily spread among them. The kitten may also be partially feral (which is why it draws away), however if it is actively vomiting, a vet visit is needed.

Vomiting can occur from many conditions such as kidney disease, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Peaches evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. Sorry to hear this. I'm sure this must be very frustrating and difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, I do recommend that Poppy goes back to the vet. Throwing up blood is very concerning, because this indicates that she is losing blood through her gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to anemia (low blood count). Kittens don't have much to lose, so it's imperative that she be evaluated and treated as soon as possible. I understand that it's difficult to keep taking Poppy back and forth to the vet. I also wouldn't have the time to do this during normal business hours. You may consider having her hospitalized until she gets better. You can ask your vet about this. Most vet clinics will offer for clients to drop their pet off and hospitalize them. This will be a bit more expensive, but may be worthwhile considering that she will likely need a few visits to the vet until the problem is completely taken care of. While vomiting hair occasionally is normal for some cats the increased frequency you have described is concerning. It is possible at Midnight is grooming more due to a seasonal coat shedding or she may have some underlying intestinal irritation contributing to the vomiting. Cats that hunt are at higher risk for parasites and this can also contribute to vomiting. If the increased frequency of vomiting continues or if you notice any other signs such as decreased appetite, lethargy or weight loss, I would recommend that you have her seen by your veterinarian. They may recommend checking a stool sample for parasites and possibly blood work to rule out other potential causes for vomiting such as kidney disease or thyroid problems.

I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet or an emergency vet right away. Cats need to eat, if they go more than a few days without eating they can develop serious liver problems which can be fatal. Continuous vomiting for so many hours is very exhausting and dehydrating, so your kitten likely needs some medical intervention to get better. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and can better advise you about treatment options.

Poor Bella! It's not normal for a kitten to throw up, but you can try a home remedy first before having to take her into the vet. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. This vomiting could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. Should Bella need to see a vet, the vet can diagnose the cause of the vomiting and can treat her for it.

Have you changed any of her food ? If so, it could just be the diet change as her tummy is still quite delicate and immature and it can take time and a few tummy upsets to get used to all the food ingredients. If no food has been changed, then I wonder if Pompom has been treated for worms. All kittens need to be treated for worms regularly, using a safe product dosed for her weight. You will have to take her to see a vet to get the right product for her. With regards to her food, just remember to change her diet gradually.
