My kitten is sick, vomiting, and can't poop. What can I do at home?

Hi there! I'm glad to see that Artemis is doing a little bit better. You may not see feces in the litter box for a few days after she starts to eat again, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. I'd watch her when she goes to the bathroom and look for any straining or discomfort, that may indicate that maybe she does have diarrhea, or even constipation. I usually will encourage owners to try a variety of foods for a cat that isn't eating. As long as there isn't a specific reason your veterinarian recommends baby food only, I would try brands like weruva (especially the seafood bits - for some reason I see cats that refuse just about everything eat that), and tiki cat. They are usually very palatable. The only thing you can really do is keep trying different foods. If your veterinarian hasn't prescribed anything yet, there are a few medications for cats that can help with appetite stimulation. Sometimes too, if it's a multiple cat household, if the ill cat isn't that attached to the other cats, and essentially just coexists, I recommend giving the ill cat some time for itself. Maybe set him up in his own area where he has his own litter box, and maybe a feliway diffuser, some rescue remedy, and/or catnip. Offer him fresh portions of a variety of foods a few times a day. Maybe that will help. From what it sounds like you're doing a great job. A cat that stops eating is always a very difficult patient, so kudos to you! I hope you find this answer helpful! It's now a medical emergency that Bunty hasn't eaten in 18 hours. If she goes much longer without eating, she will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. She is quite sick and cannot be treated at home. Please take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

I would recommend that you take Arfa to your vet for a physical examination and possibly diagnostic testing, such as bloodwork, parvo testing, or x-rays. The symptoms you describe are a little vague, but could be caused by bacterial infection, viral infection (such as panleukopenia virus), intestinal parasites, intestinal obstruction, among many others. At this point, offer Arfa many different types of dry and wet cat food and even kitten milk replacer to see if you can entice her to eat. You can also syringe her water or pedialyte to try to maintain hydration, however this can worsen nausea. Many times kittens that aren't interested in eating need IV fluids to stay hydrated. Periset is an anti-nausea medication. Mega CV is an antibiotic. Polybion is a vitamin supplement.

HI, sorry to hear Acil isn't eating well. If he's not taking in food, he will not have enough waste to make feces. Due to her young age, I suggest taking her to a vet and having some tests done to see why she is not eating. Kittens should always be eating multiple times a day and if they don't, they can get low blood sugar and have seizures and maybe die. If she is still up and walking around, I would try some canned food in a blender and use an eye dropped or oral syringe to make sure she gets some nutrients until you can get her to a vet. IF she is not responding to you and only laying there, she needs emergency veterinary attention. Force feed her small amounts of a liquid food until you can take her to a vet, and no, I cannot forsee any side effects coming from any medication the vet might give. Good luck!

I think you can safely wait until morning unless the clinical signs seem to persist or get worse. Small cats can definitely dehydrate or become hypoglycemic rather quickly, so persistent vomiting and diarrhea can become a problem. I would also consider separate the sick kitten from the healthy two until you have become certain that there is no infectious or contagious disease. Hope this helps!

This could definitely be because of the change of food but the black color concerns me that there may be digested blood present. Since she is so young and tiny, I would consider this urgent so I would try to get her into the vet soon. I would that she may become dehydrated or sicker if it isn't addressed. Your vet will likely want to run a fecal on her to check for any intestinal parasites. They may also want to know the food you are feeding her. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.
