Found a tiny kitten. How to safely treat fleas and a swollen belly?

Hello. Just about all kittens will have roundworms & this can definitely contribute to a pot-bellied appearance. You should be able to find a kitten wormer with pyrantel pamoate at any pet store. If the kittens are six weeks old, you can get topical flea medication from your vet that is very safe for kittens and will kill the fleas and keep them off for a month at a time. In the meantime, you can bathe them with a small amount of dawn dish soap and warm water. You must also clean their environment very well. Wash all the bedding and vacuum the area very well to get rid of all flea eggs. I would repeat this every few days until the flea issue goes away.

Poor Leela. Try Frontline Spray. It's safe to use on kittens as young as two days of age. You will also have to disinfect the environment, as fleas live there, not on the kitten, and if you don't disinfect that, it will be a continuing source of fleas. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I'd also have her checked out by a vet today since it seems like she is in pain. Best of luck.

Cute kitty! These look like they could be flea larvae. You could give this kitty a bath using a mild cat shampoo and then apply a flea preventative. You also might want to have your veterinarian examine this kitten to make sure it is healthy in general and to discuss routine deworming and vaccines.

The enlarged belly can be due to parasites (or worms), which are not uncommon in kittens. He should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian within the next few days, and it would be very helpful to bring a sample of feces with you in a ziploc bag or disposable container (it shouldn't matter if there is litter in the feces). This will help the vet determine if your kitten has parasites, and if so, which ones they are and the best medication to use to treat them. Unfortunately, some parasites are actually transmitted by fleas, so those will definitely need to be treated as well. While the enlarged belly is likely due to intestinal parasites, it is important to make sure that your kitten does not have a viral or bacterial infection or has ingested a foreign body. These scenarios are unlikely as long as he is active and eating well. The vet will also have recommendations on how to treat the fleas, do a general exam, and make sure that everything else is normal! Good luck with your new kitty!

Yes it ia sbsolutely ok to treat her for fleas. I would use a spot on such as Advantage or frotnline Plus or similar spot ons. and you can get some Pyrantel Pamoate from your veterinarian to worm her (it is a liquid, that does not taste terrible) or a Drontal for cats tablet.

I would recommend a Dawn dish soap bath with warm water and make sure you dry Sally well. I would look for a product called Frontline Spray, which should be labeled for young cats. Once she is 6-8 weeks, talk to a vet in your area about topical products, like Revolution or Frontline Gold. I also recommend treating the house for fleas with a carpet spray. Remember to throw out the vacuum bag and treat the other pets in the house for fleas. Make sure Sally is eating a quality diet with the proper vitamins and minerals the help the anemia.
